Overview

EN 15797:2022 is the CEN (European) standard that specifies requirements for iron‑based coagulants used in the treatment of swimming pool water. It applies to ferric materials commonly marketed as iron (III) chloride (ferric chloride), iron (III) chloride sulfate and iron (III) sulfate (ferric sulfate) liquid, whether used directly or as ingredients in formulations. The standard describes product characteristics, purity criteria, required test methods and provides guidance on labelling, transport, storage and safe handling (Annexes A and B).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and product types: ferric chloride (solid, hexahydrate, solutions), ferric sulfate solution, and ferric chloride sulfate solutions.
  • Purity and composition:
    • Active iron content must be within ±3% of the manufacturer’s declared mass fraction.
    • Typical commercial concentrations cited: ferric chloride (anhydrous ≈ 99% FeCl3; hexahydrate ≈ 59% FeCl3; liquid ≈ 40%), ferric sulfate solution (≈ 30%), ferric chloride sulfate solution (≈ 36.9%).
  • Impurities and heavy metals: limits for manganese, iron(II), insolubles and trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se) are defined by reference to EN 888 / EN 890 / EN 891 as applicable.
  • Analytical and sampling methods: testing and sampling procedures are specified by EN 17215.
  • Labelling, transport and storage:
    • Packaging: solids in suitable paper/plastic bags; liquids in corrosion‑resistant containers.
    • Hazard classifications and example labelling include GHS pictograms and hazard statements such as H290, H302, H315, H317, H318 (note: some statements depend on nickel content).
    • Suppliers must provide a safety data sheet (SDS) in the national language per REACH (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex II.
  • Safety and handling: Annex B sets out emergency procedures, incompatibilities and safe handling rules.

Practical applications and users

EN 15797:2022 is useful for:

  • Chemical manufacturers and formulators producing iron‑based coagulants for pool water.
  • Pool operators and facility managers specifying or assessing coagulant quality and safety.
  • Water treatment product suppliers and procurement teams requiring compliance evidence.
  • Testing laboratories conducting conformity analyses to EN 17215 methods.
  • Regulators and health & safety officers enforcing labelling, transport and storage rules.

By following EN 15797:2022, stakeholders can ensure consistent product quality, meet regulatory labelling/packaging expectations, and implement safe handling practices for iron‑based coagulants in swimming pool water treatment.
