Foreword
This Technical Report (CEN/TR 14585-2:2006) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 342
“Metal hoses, hose assemblies, bellows and expansion joints”, the secretariat of which is held by UNI.
This Technical Report consists of 2 parts:
EN 14585-1 "Corrugated metal hose assemblies for pressure applications - Part 1: Requirements";
CEN/TR 14585-2 "Corrugated metal hose assemblies for pressure applications - Part 2: Guidance on the
use of conformity assessment procedures".
1 Scope
This Technical Report gives guidance for:
the implementation of EN 14585-1 by proposing a procedure to place these pressure hose assemblies on
the market;
appropriate conformity assessment procedures as described in the annex III of the EU Directive 97/23/EC
for Pressure Equipment [1].

The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this Technical Report. For dated
references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced
document (including any amendments) applies.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this Technical Report, the terms and definitions given in EN 14585-1:2006 and the
following apply.
3.1
notified body
body appointed by a Member State to carry out the conformity assessment tasks and which is listed in the
Official Journal of the European Communities with its attached identification number
3.2

assessment
4 Categories
CAT pressure hose assemblies are subdivided in category I, II or III which are dependent on DN, PS and on
the fluid group as shown in Figures 1 to 4.
NOTE The demarcation lines in Figures 1 to 4 defining the limits between the categories belong to the lower category.

5 Implementation of EN 14585-1
5.1 General
Since the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) is applicable, the route to place a pressure hose
assembly on the market should follow compulsory steps where the user, the manufacturer and the notified
body have their specific role. This route is divided in two successive steps, the first to design and manufacture
the pressure hose assembly fulfilling the applicable PED requirements, the second to assess, if necessary, its
conformity to the PED which leads to its CE marking (see Clause 6).
The first step depends on the classification of the pressure hose assembly (SEP or CAT pressure hose
assembly – see EN 14585-1:2006, Clause 4) and leads to a defined “action flow chart” given in 5.2 aimed at
fulfilling the EN 14585-1 requirements.

The agreed conditions of use (see a) in the above flow chart) which have been used by the manufacturer to
design the pressure hose assembly should be confirmed to the purchaser/user. These conditions represent
the legal commitment of the manufacturer towards the purchaser/user and the authorities.

6 Use of conformity assessment procedures
6.1 General
SEP pressure hose assemblies are not subject to conformity assessment procedures. The following content
applies exclusively to CAT pressure hose assemblies.
The second step of the route to place a pressure hose assembly on the market (see 5.1) deals exclusively
with CAT pressure hose assemblies and leads to the assessment of their conformity to the PED requirements
which in turn allows the manufacturer to apply the CE marking on it and to place it on the market.
Once the manufacturer of the CAT pressure hose assembly has fulfilled all the applicable requirements of
EN 14585-1 the manufacturer should choose one of the procedures (modules) proposed by the PED in its
annex III in order to assess the conformity of the pressure hose assembly to the Essential Safety
Requirements of the PED.
Depending on the type of pressure hose assembly (unit or serial product), on the quality assurance system of
the manufacturer and on the category of the pressure hose assembly (I, II or III), the conformity to the PED of
each pressure hose assembly should be assessed using one or more modules. The following modules are
available :
for category I : Module A (internal production control)
for category II : Module A1 (internal manufacturing checks with monitoring of the final assessment)
or module D1 (production quality assurance)
or module E1 (product quality assurance)
for category III : Module B1 (EC design-examination) + module D (production quality assurance)
or module B1 (EC design-examination) + module F (product verification)
or module B (EC type-examination) + module E (product quality assurance)
or module B (EC type-examination) + module C1 (conformity to type)
or module H (full quality assurance)
The manufacturer may choose to use one of the procedures which apply to a higher category, if available.
The kind and extent of the notified body involvement in inspection and testing activities depend upon the
conformity assessment procedure chosen by the manufacturer.
6.2 Conformity assessment modules for CAT pressure hose assemblies
For pressure hose assemblies which are usually manufactured on specific conditions of use defined between
the manufacturer and the user (see EN 14585-1:2006, 6.2.1), the modules in Table 1 are suggested.

B (EC type-examination) + C1 (conformity to type)
III H (full quality assurance)
B1 (EC design-examination) + F (product verification) only if a
calculation design method is used
A manufacturer with an approved quality system (e.g. to EN ISO 9000 and EN ISO 9001) may use a module
which does not imply a quality system approved to the PED.
NOTE Other modules to those given in 6.1 can be used by the manufacturer.
6.3 Conformity assessment flow charts
6.3.1 Manufacturer using a PED approved Quality System
The manufacturer having a currently approved Quality System should have it approved to the PED by a
notified body.
