Overview
EN 60811-410:2012 (CLC adoption of IEC 60811-410:2012) is a test-method standard for assessing copper‑catalyzed oxidative degradation of polyolefin insulated conductors used in communication cables. It belongs to the IEC/EN 60811 series - test methods for non‑metallic cable materials - and is intended to be read in conjunction with EN/IEC 60811-100:2012 (General). The standard defines the procedure to determine oxidation susceptibility using an Oxidation Induction Time (OIT) approach; it replaces Annex B of EN 60811‑4‑2:2004 without technical change.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose
- Procedure for copper‑catalyzed oxidative degradation of polyolefin insulations typically found in communication cables.
- Full test conditions (acceptance criteria, exact temperature/duration limits) are to be specified by the product or cable standard that references this method.
- Test principle
- Measurement of Oxidation Induction Time (OIT) by monitoring the exothermic response of an insulated conductor when switched from an inert (N2) to an oxygen atmosphere.
- Apparatus and materials
- Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) or differential thermal analyser capable of ~20 K/min heating and isothermal control with automatic heat‑flow recording.
- Gas‑selector and regulators for high‑purity nitrogen and oxygen, flow ~50 ±5 ml/min.
- Analytical balance and small aluminium sample holders.
- Sample preparation
- Small test pieces (~3–5 mg of insulating material) cut from an insulated core; typically four replicates per sample.
- Procedure highlights
- Pre‑purge with nitrogen, heat to test temperature (a 200 °C test temperature is noted as appropriate for polyethylene), equilibrate isothermally, switch purge to oxygen (time zero), record thermogram and determine OIT by extrapolating the exotherm to the baseline.
- Measurements & reporting
- OIT determined from change‑over to oxygen to the intersection of extrapolated exotherm and baseline; measurement resolution not exceeding 1 minute.
- Instrument calibration and preparation per Annex A.
Applications
- Cable manufacturers - quality control and production monitoring for polyolefin‑insulated communication cables to ensure resistance to copper‑catalyzed oxidation.
- Materials suppliers - batch verification of polymer stabilizer performance and shelf/processing stability when copper exposure is a concern.
- Independent test laboratories - accredited testing to support specifications, failure investigations and compliance testing.
- Standards writers / specifiers - reference method for inclusion in product standards where copper‑catalyzed oxidation is relevant.
Related Standards
- EN/IEC 60811‑100:2012 - General requirements and terms (must be used in conjunction).
- EN 60811‑4‑2:2004 - Earlier part partially superseded (Annex B replaced by this Part 410).
- Other parts of the EN/IEC 60811 series covering test methods for non‑metallic cable materials.

FOREWORD 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user. 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter. 5) IEC it
