Overview

EN 60079-18:2015/A1:2017 (IEC 60079-18:2014/A1:2017) specifies requirements for equipment protection by encapsulation ("m") for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The amendment A1 (published by CENELEC, approved 2017‑09‑28) supplements the 2015 European Standard and includes a new normative Annex C that provides an alternative dielectric strength test and a batch testing procedure. Annex ZZ (informative) explains the relationship of this standard to Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX) and the presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal of the EU.

  • 1 001–10 000: test 80 samples (no failures).

  • 10 000: divide into smaller batches.

  • If failures occur, remaining units must be 100% routine tested at the standard test voltage.
• Documentation requirement: batch test procedures must be included in the manufacturer’s documentation.

• Use the standard when designing, manufacturing, testing or certifying encapsulated electrical apparatus (sensors, transmitters, connection modules, control electronics) intended for Zone 1/2 or Zone 21/22 hazardous areas where encapsulation is chosen as the protection method.

• Helps demonstrate compliance with ATEX / 2014/34/EU and provides test and sampling procedures suitable for high‑volume production.

This European standard has been prepared under a Commission’s standardisation request
M/BC/CEN/92/46 to provide one voluntary means of conforming to essential requirements of
2014/34/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 February 2014 on the harmonisation
of the laws of the Member States relating to equipment and protective systems intended for use in
potentially explosive atmospheres (recast).

Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union under that Directive,
compliance with the normative clauses of this standard given in Table ZZ.1 confers, within the limits of
the scope of this standard, a presumption of conformity with the corresponding essential requirements
of that Directive, and associated EFTA regulations.
