SIST EN 12423:1999
(Main)Polypropylene twines
Polypropylene twines
This European standard specifies requirements for twines made from polypropylene. It specifies the methods for their manufacture, their physical characteristics, as well as describing test methods to verify these characteristics. This standard allows ultra violet high inhibitors to be added but does not require them to be added. Requirements for the commercial presentation of twines are also specified. This standard does not specify requirements for agricultural twines made of polyolefin, which are covered according to EN 906:1996.
Polypropylen-Bindegarne

Overview
SIST EN 12423:1999 is a European standard published by the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) that specifies the requirements for polypropylene twines. This standard outlines the manufacturing methods, physical characteristics, and testing procedures for polypropylene twines to ensure their quality and performance. While the standard allows for the addition of ultra violet (UV) high inhibitors to enhance durability, their inclusion is not mandatory. Additionally, the standard sets out rules for the commercial presentation of polypropylene twines. It is important to note that agricultural twines made from polyolefin are excluded from SIST EN 12423:1999 and are regulated separately under EN 906:1996.
Key Topics
- Material Specification: Defines the use of polypropylene as the base material for twine manufacturing.
- Manufacturing Methods: Details the processes for producing polypropylene twines to maintain consistency and reliability.
- Physical Characteristics: Specifies requirements such as strength, elongation, and resistance to environmental factors.
- Testing Procedures: Describes standardized test methods to verify that twines comply with physical and performance metrics.
- UV Stabilization: Permits the optional addition of UV high inhibitors to improve weather resistance without making it compulsory.
- Commercial Presentation: Sets requirements for packaging, labelling, and dimensions to facilitate trade and consumer clarity.
- Scope Limitation: Excludes agricultural polyolefin twines, directing users to standard EN 906:1996 for such products.
Applications
SIST EN 12423:1999-polypropylene twines are widely used across industries that require strong, lightweight, and durable twine solutions, including:
- Packaging industry: For bundling and securing lightweight goods.
- Craft and DIY projects: Providing a reliable material for various crafting applications.
- General household use: Used for tying, binding, and securing items owing to their versatility and strength.
- Marine and outdoor applications: When UV inhibitors are added, twines can be used where exposure to sunlight demands resistance to degradation.
- Industrial sectors: Used in settings where cost-efficient, durable twines are needed for temporary or permanent binding solutions.
The clarity provided by SIST EN 12423:1999 ensures manufacturers and users benefit from predictable quality and performance in polypropylene twines.
Related Standards
- EN 906:1996 - Specifies requirements for agricultural twines made from polyolefin materials; applicable where polypropylene twines for agricultural use are required.
- ISO 6937 - International guidelines on textile rope characteristics that may complement polypropylene twine specifications.
- EN ISO 527 - For testing mechanical characteristics of polymer materials, relevant for quality assurance of polypropylene products.
- CEN/TC 248: The technical committee responsible for the preparation and maintenance of standards related to cordage and twines.
Understanding these related standards helps users and manufacturers align polypropylene twines with broader quality and performance expectations in various applications.
