kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 is the SIST publication of the draft European Standard prEN 12944-2. It belongs to the EN 12944 vocabulary series and defines terms relating to fertilizers for use in product descriptions, declarations, testing and technical communication.

What does kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 specifies the vocabulary for fertilizers. It gives agreed terms and definitions so users can identify fertilizer materials, nutrient forms, physical properties and safety-related concepts in the same way.

The document is organized into:

  • Clause 1: Scope
  • Clause 2: Normative references
  • Clause 3: Terms and definitions, grouped into five subclauses
  • Annex A: Informative index
  • Bibliography

Annex A provides an alphabetical index in English, French and German, which helps readers find a term quickly.

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026?

kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 is a vocabulary standard, so its main technical content is the set of defined terms in Clause 3. In practice, this means users should apply the document’s wording consistently when naming materials, declaring nutrients or describing product behavior.

Product and material terms

Clause 3.1 defines common fertilizer materials and slow-release nitrogen products such as manure, slurry, guano, urea formaldehyde (UF), methylene urea (MU), isobutylidene diurea (IBDU), crotonylidene diurea (CDU), triazone and urea condensate. These definitions matter when a product label, specification or test report needs a precise material name rather than a generic description.

Nutrient forms and declaration terms

Clause 3.2 defines nutrient-related terms such as total nitrogen, ammoniacal nitrogen, nitric nitrogen, ureic nitrogen, cyanamide nitrogen, total phosphorus, water-soluble phosphorus, neutral ammonium citrate soluble phosphorus, formic acid soluble phosphorus, total potassium and water-soluble potassium. It also defines cold water-insoluble nitrogen (CWIN), cold water-soluble nitrogen (CWSN), hot water-insoluble nitrogen (HWIN), hot water-soluble nitrogen (HWXN) and hot water-soluble nitrogen only (HWSN only). These terms are important because they separate total content from the fractions that are available under defined conditions.

Physical and physico-chemical properties

Clause 3.3 covers properties such as density, loose bulk density, tapped bulk density, sieving, undersize, oversize, crushing strength, caking, anti-caking agent, saturation temperature, gel strength, pourability, sedimentation, flow rate, free flowing, segregation, sphericity, porosity, disintegrable rate and salt out temperature (SOT). In practice, these terms support product handling, packaging, storage stability and performance checks.

Safety-related terms

Clause 3.4 defines resistance to detonation, oxidizing solid, oxidizing liquid, GHS label, seedling emergence and growth, and self-sustaining decomposition. These definitions matter for hazard communication, transport, storage and evaluating whether a fertilizer may create safety concerns.

Other technical terms

Clause 3.5 defines free acidity, neutralizing value, vegetative vigour, moisture, essential water, water of crystallisation, water of constitution and longevity. These terms are used to describe composition, neutralizing effect, plant response and the behavior of slowly available nutrients.

What terms does kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 define?

kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 defines fertilizer vocabulary rather than product grades. Key examples include:

  • Urea formaldehyde (UF) - a slow-release nitrogenous fertilizer made by reacting urea and formaldehyde.
  • Methylene urea (MU) - a slow-release nitrogenous fertilizer made from urea and formaldehyde reaction products.
  • Cold water-soluble nitrogen (CWSN) - the nitrogen fraction soluble under the clause’s defined cold-water conditions.
  • Hot water-soluble nitrogen only (HWSN only) - the fraction soluble at the hot-water condition but not at the cold-water condition.
  • GHS label - the hazard information label used for a hazardous product.
  • Neutralizing value - a measure expressed against the neutralizing effect of 100 kg of product.
  • Longevity - the period over which slowly available nutrients are released for plant use.

Who uses kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026?

kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 is used by people who need a shared language for fertilizers. That includes fertilizer manufacturers, laboratory staff, technical writers, regulators, conformity and quality teams, and buyers who compare product declarations or test results.

It is particularly useful in fertilizer specification, product classification, nutrient declaration, handling and safety communication. The document also helps multilingual users because Annex A indexes the terms in English, French and German.

What changed in kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 from the previous edition?

kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 supersedes EN 12944-2:1999 and EN 12944-2:1999/AC:2000. The foreword states that the definitions were reviewed, amended and extended in light of new legislation, international standards and other European standards.

The foreword also states these technical changes:

  • added terms for several slow-release nitrogen products and nitrogen fractions
  • added terms for phosphorus, potassium, density, disintegrable rate, salt out temperature and safety-related concepts
  • moved particle size analysis by sieving/granulometry by sieving to prEN 12944-1 rev
  • deleted the term apparent density

Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026?

The document names these related standards and references:

  • prEN 12944-1 rev - the vocabulary part for general terms; Clause A and the foreword point to it for the moved particle-size term
  • EN 12944-3:2025 - the vocabulary part for liming materials; it is cited for neutralizing value and the series structure
  • EN 13535 - gives a classification scheme for fertilizers and liming materials
  • ISO 8157:2022 - provides source definitions for many terms that are adapted in this part
  • Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 - the European legal framework mentioned in the introduction and foreword for fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors

What does the kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 document contain?

kSIST FprEN 12944-2:2026 contains a structured list of fertilizer terms with short definitions and source notes. Clause 3 is the main body of the document, and its subclauses separate product terms, nutrient-declaration terms, physical and physico-chemical terms, safety terms and other technical terms.

The document also includes an informative index in Annex A, which lists the defined terms with references to their clause numbers. The bibliography shows the legal and standardization context used for the terminology.
