Overview
SIST EN ISO 3262-6:2023 specifies the requirements and test methods for precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) used as an extender in various industrial applications. Developed by ISO/TC 256 in collaboration with CEN/TC 298, this standard ensures consistent quality and reliable testing for PCC products across Europe and internationally. It supersedes the previous edition EN ISO 3262-6:1998 and includes updated technical specifications vital for manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and end-users.
This standard targets industries requiring precise quality control of pigments and extenders, particularly where PCC is involved. It defines essential properties such as chemical composition, particle size, and purity, as well as detailed procedures for their accurate determination.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
- Sets out minimum requirements for precipitated calcium carbonate.
- Details standardized test methods for reliable quality assessment.
Material Definition
- PCC is defined as synthetic calcium carbonate with specific crystalline structures, either trigonal (calcite) or rhombic bipyramidal (aragonite), possibly with surface modifications.
Essential Requirements (Table 1)
- Minimum calcium carbonate content: 90% by mass.
- Maximum residue on 45 µm sieve: 0.1% to ensure fine particle distribution.
- Matter volatile at 105 °C: max 1.0% to evaluate moisture and other volatiles.
- Maximum loss on ignition: 50% (method agreed upon by parties).
- Matter soluble in water: max 0.2%.
- pH of aqueous suspension: range 7 to 11.
- Matter insoluble in hydrochloric acid: max 0.2%.
Conditional Requirements (Table 2)
- Particle size distribution (D50, D90) - to be agreed per application.
- Colour and lightness assessment methodologies.
- Resistivity of aqueous extract for electrical properties.
Test Methods
- Sampling per ISO 15528 ensures representative samples.
- Two main methods for determining matter insoluble in hydrochloric acid:
- Oven Method: Uses 25% hydrochloric acid and membrane filtration.
- Furnace Method: Recommended for surface-modified PCC with 17% hydrochloric acid.
- Other referenced ISO test parts cover volatile matter, solubility, pH, and colorimetric analysis.
Applications
Paints and Coatings: PCC enhances brightness, opacity, and consistency in paints by serving as a filler/extender. Compliance with EN ISO 3262-6 ensures optimal dispersion and chemical stability.
Plastics Industry: PCC improves the mechanical properties and surface finish of plastics. Standardized PCC helps maintain product uniformity.
Paper Manufacturing: In papermaking, PCC acts as a pigment and filler to improve brightness and printability. This standard supports quality control for consistent paper attributes.
Rubber and Adhesives: PCC is used to modify viscosity and mechanical strength; meeting specific requirements assures performance in formulations.
Laboratory Quality Assurance: Enables labs to perform accurate and comparable chemical and physical tests of PCC batches, ensuring reproducibility and regulatory compliance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
