Cabinet roller towels - Performance requirements and processing
This Standard specifies requirements for the following:
a) Three categories of cabinet towel, the categories being defined in terms of mass per unit area and tensile strength of the fabric; certain constructional and performance requirements are also covered.
b) Process validation procedures to ensure that cabinet towels achieve the condition of hygienic cleanliness in processing.
It also contains informative annexes containing the following:
- an example of suitable fabric structure,
- recommendations for the care, use and transportation of cabinet towels after processing,
- examples of key process variables for disinfection,
- the preparation and application of bioindicators for the validation of the process to achieve hygienic cleanliness.
The colour fastness to washing test and the requirement level are based on the assumption that chlorine bleaching treatments will not be used in laundering.

the hands.4.1.2 Strength and selvedgesThe towel needs to have sufficient strength (see Table 1) to withstand the pulling action exerted whenthe towel is rolled and unrolled as well as when the hands are wiped and dried by the user. Selvedgesneed to be constructed so the towel rolls and unrolls correctly within the dispenser for which it isdesigned (See 4.2.2.2).4.1.3 Wiping functionIn order to wipe the hands effectively the towel needs to be readily moulded by the hands and fingers, exert sufficient friction to feel comfortable when in contact with the skin, and present an irregularsurface to improve the removal of residual substances from the hands. These attributes can only beassessed subjectively.SIST EN 13569:2001
EN 13569:2001(E)54.1.4 Drying functionThe fabric shall have a high capacity for the rapid absorption of water. The liquid absorbancy time istaken as measure for the drying properties (see 4.2.2.1).4.1.5 CleanlinessFor the purposes of this standard, a towel shall be considered to be hygienically clean when treated ina disinfecting process carried out according to a validated washing and finishing procedure (seeclause 6). As micro-organisms may start to multiply as soon as the disinfecting process is complete, its effectiveness is maintained by the removal of soil and stains (sources of nutrients) and adequatelydrying the towel.NOTEMoisture and a source of nutrients are required by the micro-organisms in order to multiply.4.2 Technical characteristics4.2.1 FibresCotton or man-made fibres or blends shall be used to produce plain or twisted yarns for weaving thefabric.NOTEThe introduction of polyester has the effect of augmenting the resistance to pilling and abrasion, butreducing the absorption capacity (e.g. The introduction of 50 % polyester reduces the absorption capacity byapproximately 25 %), conversaly the introduction of man-made fibres can augment the absorption; for example amixture composed of
62 % cotton, 25 % polyester and 13 % viscose has a similar rate of absorption capacity tothat of a 100 % cotton fabric.4.2.2 Fabric4.2.2.1 Properties and performancea) Fabrics shall conform to the requirements shown in Table 1. The requirements of Table 1 apply totowels, which have been bleached in manufacture, and prior to the first processing (see 4.1.5) inthe laundry.NOTEBleaching by the manufacturer before supply to the laundry is the more common practice. If theconditions of supply vary, then the point at which the performance requirements apply will vary also and someammendment of the values given in Table 1 may be needed.b) Dyed fabrics shall also comply with the requirements shown in Table 2.SIST EN 13569:2001

Selvedges shall be constructed so the towel rolls andunrolls correctly within the dispenser for which it is designed. Because of their importance to theperformance of the towel and the functioning of the cabinet, selvedges should be properlyconstructed.NOTE 1Some towels may include polyester yarns in the selvedge to provide extra strength. There is, atpresent, no agreed meaningful test for selvedge performance.NOTE 2Examples of suitable structures are given in annex A.4.3 Suitability for dispensers4.3.1 GeneralThe towel under normal tension shall fit easily into the compartments of the dispenser cabinet forwhich it is intended to be used and its width shall not exceed that of the entry and exit openings of thedispenser.SIST EN 13569:2001
EN 13569:2001(E)74.3.2 Length and widthIn order to fit the different
types of dispenser available, the stated length of a towel may vary from20 m to 45 m (measured according to EN 1773), and the stated width from 0,19 m to 0,30 m(measured according to EN 1773). However, particular types of dispenser may require towels ofdifferent dimensions. The towel shall be capable of being loaded in such a way that it will allow the dispenser, for which it isdesigned, to function properly without causing any blockage.4.4 Specifications4.4.1 Performance in serviceTable 3 denotes the fabric specification for all cabinet towels at the time of every supply to the end-user whilst compliance with this Standard is claimed.Table 3 — Fabric properties at the time of every supplyLiquidabsorbencetimepHHygieniccleanlinessPresentationsmax. 54,6 to 7,8See 4.1.5 and clause 6The towel shall be finished, dry, rolled and fit for purpose, which includes its use in thedispenserEN 1644-1 :1997annex BEN 1413The towel shall be free from unacceptable stains (as defined in the contract with the customer).5 TestingSampling frequency shall be as agreed in the contract between the parties. From each roll to be tested a laboratory sample shall be cut, from a position taken at random, but atleast 3 m from the end of the roll. The laboratory sample shall be large enough to provide test specimens for all the tests required bythis standard.6 Towel processing6.1 Hygienic processing of towelsThis Standard requires that hygienic cleanliness shall be achieved during the washing and finishingprocess.
