General Information
Overview
EN 131-7:2013 is the CEN European Standard that defines terms and specifies general design characteristics, dimensional limits and tests for mobile ladders with platform. It applies to ladders with a working platform up to 1 m², a maximum platform height of 5 m, designed for use by one person, and a rated maximum load of 150 kg (user plus tools/equipment/materials). EN 131-7:2013 is part of the EN 131 ladder series and was approved by CEN in 2013.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and exclusions: Covers mobile platform ladders only; excludes portable ladders (EN 131-1, EN 131-4), fire-service ladders (EN 1147), loft ladders (EN 14795), step stools (EN 14183), stair/guard-rail systems (EN ISO 14122-3) and insulating ladders (EN 50528).
- Dimensional limits:
- Platform area between 0.4 m × 0.4 m and 1 m²; platform sides 400–1 000 mm.
- Guardrail height: minimum 950 mm above platform.
- Working area and clearances defined (e.g., front guardrail distance w between 950–1 100 mm).
- Ascending-leg angle categories and related requirements (handrails required when angle is between 45° and 60°).
- Load and user limits: Maximum combined load 150 kg; designed for a single user.
- Safety features:
- Toe boards on non-access sides (top edge ≥ 50 mm).
- Guardrails, middle rails and gates to prevent falls; guardrail geometry must prevent a 470 mm diameter sphere passing through.
- Wheels/casters must include devices to prevent movement during use (brakes, locking).
- Stabilisers or ballast must be provided where required for stability; clear marking if required for safe use.
- Testing and verification:
- Tests include torsion, bending, platform and complete-product tests, stability, stiffness, handrail and marking durability checks (see Clause 6).
- Marking and user instructions must be durable and legible.
Practical applications and users
- Relevant to manufacturers, designers and test laboratories producing or certifying mobile ladders with platform for industrial and commercial use.
- Useful for safety managers, procurement officers and facilities teams specifying ladders for maintenance, warehousing, light assembly or access tasks where a small raised platform is required.
- Compliance officers and training providers use EN 131-7 to set workplace rules and verify that equipment meets European safety expectations.
