Overview

SIST EN 60243-2:2014 is a European standard detailing additional requirements for testing the electric strength of solid insulating materials using direct voltage. This standard, developed by CLC in alignment with IEC 60243-2:2013, supplements the base test methods established in EN 60243-1 by focusing particularly on direct voltage stress scenarios. It supersedes the earlier 2001 edition and provides a refined editorial framework to support accurate and reliable assessment of insulation materials under direct current (DC) conditions. The standard is essential for manufacturers, testers, and certification bodies involved in electrical insulation materials testing.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
SIST EN 60243-2:2014 applies specifically to the evaluation of solid insulating materials subjected to direct voltage stresses, adding requirements beyond those covered for power-frequency testing in EN 60243-1. It clarifies how to handle the distinct electrical behaviors of materials under DC conditions.

  • Voltage Distribution and Current Components
The standard explains the significance of various current types during DC testing: capacitive current, electric absorption current, leakage current, and partial discharge currents. It highlights how these currents and voltage distributions differ from alternating current (AC) testing due to capacitive and resistive effects, as well as interfacial polarization in heterogeneous materials.

  • Test Equipment and Setup
Requirements for the electrical apparatus include a voltage source with controlled polarity and a ripple not exceeding 2% of the applied voltage. It mandates smooth voltage increases, current-limiting resistors to prevent damage during breakdown, and safety measures such as earthing and short-circuiting electrodes post-test to dissipate residual charges.

  • Test Procedures and Parameters
The document stipulates guidelines for voltage application modes, including short-time, slow, very slow, and proof tests. It aligns these procedures with those in EN 60243-1 while adding considerations unique to direct voltage testing such as voltage rise rates and current measurement for breakdown detection.

  • Safety and Accuracy
Special attention is given to controlling voltage ripple, avoiding transient fluctuations, and ensuring that current-sensitive interrupting devices are employed to prevent damage or hazardous conditions during breakdown.

Applications

  • Insulating Materials Testing
SIST EN 60243-2:2014 is crucial for laboratories and industries testing the dielectric strength of solid insulating materials used in electrical and electronic equipment, ensuring reliable performance under DC voltage stresses.

  • Quality Assurance in Electrical Manufacturing
Manufacturers of cables, transformers, capacitors, and other electric components rely on this standard to verify insulation quality and compliance with international specifications.

  • Research and Development
Material scientists and engineers use the standard to characterize new insulating materials or composites, assessing their breakdown properties under direct voltage to predict field performance.

  • Certification and Compliance
Certification bodies reference this standard when auditing conformity of insulating materials to European and international electrical safety requirements.

Related Standards

  • EN 60243-1:2013
This part is foundational, providing general test methods for electric strength under power-frequency voltages. EN 60243-2 extends its provisions to direct voltage scenarios.

  • IEC 60674-2
Harmonized as EN 60674-2, this standard relates to insulating materials and treatment procedures that may support comprehensive electrical testing strategies.

  • Other IEC 60243 Series Documents
The series covers various test methods for electric strength of insulating materials, suitable for diversified testing requirements involving different voltage types and conditions.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conform
