Materials obtained from End-of-Life Tyres (ELT) - Sampling method for granulates and powders stored in big-bags and small-bags
This document specifies methods for obtaining a sample of rubber granulates or powders derived from end-of-life tyres which have been stored in big-bags and small-bags.
Several sample increments at different levels within the bag are obtained, which represent the average particle size distribution within the bag. From these sample increments, a representative sample is derived.
The methods described in this standard may be used, for example, when the samples are to be tested for bulk density, durability, particle size distribution, moisture content, ash content, ash melting behaviour, calorific value, chemical composition, and impurities.

Introduction
Particle size distribution and related parameters are key measurements for product characterization of
size-reduced materials, such as granulates and powders derived from End-of-Life Tyres (ELTs). To
obtain an accurate particle size distribution, a representative sample of the material to be tested will be
taken according to the principle that every particle of the sample that represents the lot will have an
equal probability of being included in the sample.
Sampling criteria to assess characteristics of granulates and powders at different stages of a production
process by size reduction of end-of-life tyres are given in EN 14243-2:2019, Clause 5.
When the lot to be characterized is a big-bag or a small-bag, particular attention is given in order to
obtain a representative sample(s) because of the tendency of the stored material to segregate over time
with the smaller particles settling in the lower part of the bag.
1 Scope
This document specifies methods for obtaining a sample of rubber granulates or powders derived from
end-of-life tyres which have been stored in big-bags and small-bags.
Sample increments at different levels within the bag are obtained, which represent the average particle
size distribution within the bag. From these sample increments, a representative sample is derived.
The methods specified in this document are applicable when the samples are to be tested for e.g. bulk
density, durability, particle size distribution, moisture content, ash content, ash melting behaviour,
calorific value, chemical composition, impurities.

3.1
granulation processes
successive shredding, crushing, fragmentation, sorting and sieving of ELT in order to separate the
textile or metal reinforcements from the rubber matrix
3.2
powders
result of processing ELT by reducing them in the form of particles less than 0,8 mm and excluding loose
metal wires and loose textile fibres
3.3
granulates
result of processing rubber to reduce it in size into finely dispersed particles between typically 0,8 mm
and 20 mm

end-of-life tyres
tyre no longer suitable for its original purpose
3.5
laboratory sample
sample or sub-sample sent to or received by the laboratory
Note 1 to entry: When the laboratory sample has been prepared (reduced) by subdivision, mixing or crushing, or
by a combination of these processes, it becomes the test sample. If a laboratory sample requires no preparation, it
can be used directly as the test sample. A test portion is removed from the test sample for testing or analysis
purposes. The laboratory sample is the final sample from the point of view of the sample collection, but it is the
initial sample from the point of view of the laboratory.
Note 2 to entry: Several laboratory samples of the same material to be tested can be prepared and sent to
different laboratories, or they can be sent to the same laboratory for different purposes. If they are sent to the
same laboratory, they are generally considered to be a single laboratory sample and documented as such.

different heights within a big-bag. It shall be shaped to allow the operator to reach differen
