Overview
EN 495-5:2013 - published by CEN - is the European test method for assessing foldability at low temperature of plastic and rubber flexible sheets for roof waterproofing. It defines the specimen preparation, apparatus, exposure and folding procedure, inspection and reporting needed to determine the lowest temperature at which a membrane can be folded without cracking. EN 495-5:2013 supersedes EN 495-5:2000 and adds allowance for instrumented folding apparatus and precision data from a Round Robin test.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Tests behaviour of plastic and rubber sheets for waterproofing to folding after low-temperature exposure (product characterization before use).
- Specimens:
- Standard: four specimens 100 × 50 mm (two longitudinal, two transverse) per temperature step.
- For artificially aged material, reduced specimens (two of 50 × 25 mm) may be used.
- Sheets with backing: sample from uncoated area; tested only in machine direction.
- Apparatus:
- Folding apparatus (metal or instrumented) with adjustable parallel plates.
- Cold chamber capable down to −45 °C with ±2 °C accuracy.
- Inspection tool: 6× magnifier.
- Procedure:
- Measure overall thickness (EN 1849-2) and set plate gap to three times thickness.
- Loop specimens (top surface inside/outside variants), condition 1 h at test temperature.
- Close folding apparatus within 1 s and hold for a minimum of 1 s in the cold chamber.
- Allow specimens to warm to (23 ± 5) °C and inspect folded area for cracks under 6× magnification.
- Repeat in 5 °C temperature steps; cold folding temperature = lowest step where no specimen shows cracking.
- Precision & reporting:
- Precision confirmed by a Round Robin (seven labs) with agreement at the 5 °C step size.
- Test report must reference EN 495-5, product identification, sampling (EN 13416), specimen prep, results, deviations and test date.
Applications and users
EN 495-5:2013 is used to demonstrate low-temperature performance of roof waterproofing membranes and to support:
- Product manufacturers (quality control & product data).
- Independent testing laboratories (type/acceptance testing).
- Specifiers, architects and engineers (material selection for cold climates).
- Certification bodies and regulators (conformity assessment).
- Roofing contractors assessing suitability for installation/repair in low temperatures.
