Overview

SIST EN 749:2005 is a European standard specifying the requirements for handball goals used in both training and competition settings. It covers two types of goals: those with ground sockets (for fixed installation) and freestanding goals. The standard outlines essential functional and safety requirements and test methods to ensure that handball goals are durable, stable, and safe for use in sports played indoors such as handball, indoor hockey, and indoor football.

By adhering to SIST EN 749:2005, manufacturers, facility managers, and sports organizations can ensure that handball goals meet recognized benchmarks for performance and player safety.

Key Topics

  • Types of Handball Goals:

    • Type 1 – Goals with ground sockets for fixed installation
    • Type 2 – Freestanding goals with anti-tilting devices
  • Functional Requirements:

    • Standardized dimensions for the frame and net
    • Acceptable materials for goal components (timber, steel, light metals, plastics)
    • Durability and resistance to weather and mechanical stress
  • Safety Requirements:

    • Rounded edges and corners to minimize injury risk
    • Minimum breaking strength for nets and ropes
    • Secure net fixings to prevent player injury and ball escape
    • Stability tests ensuring goals do not tip or slide during play
    • Prevention of frame entrapment hazards
  • Test Methods:

    • Specific procedures for verifying strength and stability
    • Mechanical load testing on goal frames and nets
  • Identification and User Information:

    • Mandatory fixed warning labels regarding correct use and potential hazards
    • Clear assembly, installation, and maintenance instructions
    • Legible product markings including manufacturer information and year of manufacture

Applications

Handball goals conforming to SIST EN 749:2005 are widely used in the following contexts:

  • Indoor Sports Facilities:
Schools, sports centers, and gymnasiums for both training sessions and official competitions.

  • Multi-Purpose Venues:
Handball goals that meet this standard can also be used for indoor hockey and indoor football, maximizing equipment utilization.

  • Club and League Matches:
Ensures all equipment used in official games abides by the same safety and performance standards.

  • Goal Manufacturing and Wholesale:
Producers and distributors use the standard as a reference for product development, quality assurance, and marketing.

  • Installation and Facility Management:
Facility operators can ensure compliance with safety requirements, reducing the risk of accidents and legal liability.

Related Standards

While SIST EN 749:2005 focuses specifically on handball goal safety and function, several related standards complement its guidelines:

  • EN ISO 1806: Fishing nets - Determination of mesh breaking force (applicable for net testing)
  • prEN ISO 2307: Fibre ropes - Determination of certain physical and mechanical properties
  • EN ISO 2062: Textiles - Yarns from packages - Determination of single-end breaking force and elongation at break

Other standards in the indoor sports equipment domain (ICS 97.220.30) may also be relevant for facilities outfitting and maintenance.

By implementing SIST EN 749:2005, sports facilities and suppliers can ensure the highest standards for handball goal safety, player protection, and equipment longevity, supporting fair play and reducing the risk of sports injuries.
