SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 50117-9-1:2026 from SIST/CENELEC. It covers coaxial indoor drop cables for analogue and digital one- and two-way signal transmission, and it specifies the test methods and requirements for their electrical, mechanical, environmental and fire-performance characteristics. It is meant for manufacturers, test labs, installers and buyers working with indoor coaxial cables for systems operating from 5 MHz to 1 000 MHz.
What does SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 specify?
SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 is a sectional specification for coaxial indoor drop cables. Its scope includes cable networks for television signals, sound signals and interactive services, as well as BCT signals supplied by CATV, MATV or SMATV cable networks.
The document is organized into a scope, normative references, terms and definitions, requirements for cable construction/design/installation, tests and requirements for completed cables, and a normative annex with cable types.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A (normative) | Cable types, including typical properties and preferred nominal dimensions and ratings for cables with copper inner conductors |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026?
SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 combines construction rules with performance tests, so users need to design the cable and then verify the finished product. The most important points are the operating limits, the material and construction rules, and the electrical, mechanical, environmental and fire-performance checks in Clause 5.
Operating range and safety limits, Clause 4.1 - The cable is designed for -40 °C to +70 °C and for frequencies from 5 MHz to 1 000 MHz. It may operate up to 72 V DC, but it is not intended for direct connection to mains electricity or other low-impedance sources.
Construction and materials, Clauses 4.2 to 4.8 - The inner conductor shall be solid, the dielectric shall use polyolefin materials, the outer conductor or screen shall meet the specified construction options, and the sheath shall be PVC or HFFR. In practice, this fixes the cable build and the material family that can be used.
Screening and identification, Clauses 4.4, 4.14 and 4.15 - The document requires defined screening constructions, meter marking on the sheath, and labels on drums or coils with the cable designation, attenuation value at 800 MHz, screening class, Euro-class where applicable, and supplier name. This helps installers and buyers identify the product and check whether it fits a network and fire classification requirement.
Low-frequency and DC checks, Clause 5.2.1 - The cable is tested for conductor resistance, dielectric strength, insulation resistance, capacitance when required, and spark testing of the sheath. This shows whether the cable can be installed and handled without basic electrical defects.
High-frequency performance, Clause 5.2.2 - The cable must meet limits for attenuation, characteristic impedance, return loss, regularity of impedance, transfer impedance and screening attenuation. For users, this is the core transmission check: it tells whether the cable will support the planned signal quality over the stated frequency range.
Mechanical durability, Clause 5.3 - The cable is checked for adhesion of the dielectric, crush resistance, sheath marking abrasion, simulated installation bending, flexure and other mechanical conditions. This matters because indoor drop cables are handled, routed and bent during installation.
Environmental and fire performance, Clauses 5.4 and 5.5 - The document includes cold bend performance, climatic sequence, damp heat and fire performance testing. The fire class is selected according to EN 50575 and classified according to EN 13501-6, so the cable can be matched to construction-use requirements.
What terms does SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 define?
SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 defines key cable terms in Clause 3 and uses several abbreviations throughout the document.
- Drop cable - A coaxial cable used between a subscriber tap or directional coupler and a system outlet, or between a subscriber tap, splitter and outlet.
- Indoor drop cable - A drop cable intended for indoor application.
- CATV - Cable television network, used here as one of the network types that can provide BCT signals.
- MATV - Master antenna television network, mentioned as another network type covered by the scope.
- SMATV - Satellite master antenna television network, also included in the scope for BCT signal transmission.
- CPR - Construction Products Regulation, referenced for fire classes where the cable is used in construction works.
- Euro-class - The fire-performance class designation used with CPR marking and labelling.
Who uses SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026?
SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 is used by cable manufacturers, material suppliers, test laboratories, installers and system designers. It also helps quality managers and buyers who need to specify an indoor coaxial drop cable for television, sound or interactive service networks and check its electrical performance, screening class, fire class and installation behaviour.
What changed in SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 supersedes SIST EN 50117-9-1:2019. The foreword states three technical changes: the normative references were dated, Clause 4 on cable construction, design and installation was completely revised, and Annex A was completely revised.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026?
SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 relies on several standards for materials, tests and system context.
- EN 50117-1 - the generic coaxial-cable specification that provides the common base requirements.
- EN 50290-2-1 and the EN 50290-2-xx series - common design rules and raw-material rules for cable construction.
- EN 50289 test methods - electrical, mechanical and environmental methods used for resistance, strength, attenuation, bending, abrasion and related checks.
- EN 60811-201, EN 60811-202 and EN 60811-203 - measurement methods for insulation thickness, sheath thickness and overall dimensions.
- EN 60728-11 - safety requirements for installation in cable networks.
- EN 50575 and EN 13501-6 - fire performance choice and Euro-class classification.
- IEC 62153-4-3 and IEC 62153-4-4 - screening and transfer-impedance methods for shielded cables.
What does the SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 document contain?
SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 contains construction requirements for the cable core, dielectric, screen and sheath, plus identification and labelling rules. It also contains test tables for low-frequency/DC behaviour, high-frequency transmission, mechanical robustness, environmental exposure and fire-performance selection.
Annex A adds cable types with preferred nominal dimensions and ratings for copper inner conductors, including attenuation, screening class, current and operating-voltage information. In practice, that annex helps users choose a suitable cable type and write a detail specification without starting from a blank page.
