Soil improvers and growing media - Determination of nitrogen - Part 2: Dumas method
This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of nitrogen in soil improvers and growing media. The dry combustion method was developed originally as a manual method by Dumas [5]. Its application is improved greatly due to the use of modern automated equipment and is applicable to all forms of nitrogen.
The method is not applicable to liming materials and preformed materials such as mineral wool slabs and foam slabs.
NOTE The requirements of the standard may differ from the national legal requirements for the declaration of the products concerned.

Overview
SIST EN 13654-2:2002 is a European Standard established by the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) for the determination of nitrogen content in soil improvers and growing media using the Dumas dry combustion method. This standard specifies a method that measures all forms of nitrogen by combusting samples at high temperatures (at least 900°C) in the presence of oxygen. Originally developed as a manual method by Dumas, this technique has been significantly enhanced with modern automated equipment to improve accuracy and efficiency. Importantly, this method is not suitable for liming materials or preformed materials like mineral wool slabs or foam slabs.
The standard ensures consistent nitrogen analysis crucial for soil treatment, fertilizer production, and quality control in horticulture and agriculture sectors.
Key Topics
- Scope: Applicable to soil improvers and growing media, excluding liming and certain preformed materials.
- Principle: Dry combustion at high temperature oxidizes nitrogen compounds into measurable nitrogen gas.
- Apparatus: Uses modern Dumas analyzers with precise detection, supported by standard laboratory equipment like analytical balances.
- Sample Preparation: Follows EN 13040 requirements for preparation ensuring representative and accurate testing.
- Calibration: Employs nitrogen calibration substances such as acetanilide or amino acids with known nitrogen content.
- Calculation: Nitrogen content is calculated on a dry matter basis, expressed in milligrams of nitrogen per gram of dry sample.
- Precision: The method’s repeatability and reproducibility have been validated through interlaboratory trials, ensuring reliable results.
- Test Reporting: Includes detailed sample identification, test methods, results, moisture content, and bulk density.
Applications
- Soil Improvement Products: Determines nitrogen levels in organic or mineral soil improvers, ensuring proper nutrient composition.
- Growing Media: Helps producers and users of horticultural substrates verify nitrogen content for optimal plant growth.
- Fertilizer Quality Control: Enables manufacturers to certify nitrogen content, complying with European standards.
- Environmental Monitoring: Supports analysis of nitrogen in biowaste and composted materials for sustainable soil management.
- Research and Development: Provides a precise method for studying nitrogen dynamics in soil amendments and substrates.
