lEC 60320-1:2015(E) sets the general requirements for appliance couplers for two poles and two poles with earth contact and for the connection of electrical devices for household and similar onto the mains supply. This part of lEC 60320 is also valid for appliance inlets/appliance outlets integrated or incorporated in appliances. The rated voltage does not exceed 250 V (a.c.) and the rated current does not exceed 16 A. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2001 and Amendment 1:2007. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) Standard sheets moved from IEC 60320-1 to IEC 60320-3. b) Clarification of requirements for non-standardized appliance couplers.

lEC 60320-3:2014 sets the dimensions for appliance couplers for two poles and two poles with earth contact: - for the connection of electrical devices for household and similar onto the mains supply and - for the interconnection of the electrical supply to appliance or equipment - and dimensions for gauges.

This standard is applicable to two-pole appliance couplers for a.c. only, with or without earthing contact, with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V and a rated current not exceeding 16 A, for household and similar general purposes and intended for incorporation or integration within electric appliances or other electric equipment of multi part construction for 50 Hz or 60 Hz supply which depend on the weight of the appliance to ensure correct engagement.

This Amandment adds appliance couplers of rated current 6 A, gives  dimensions of connectors and appliance inlets 6 A 250 V for  cold conditions for class II equipment IPX4 (Standard Sheets  C and D). Specifies corresponding cords. Changes test  conditions respectively.

They are intended for the connection of the supply cord to portable electrical appliances of class II for household, commercial and light industrial use. The clauses of this standard supplement or modify the corresponding clauses in EN 60320-1.

Appliance couplers complying with this part of lEC 60320 are suitable for normal use at ambient temperatures not normally exceeding +40 °C, but their average over a period of 24 h does not exceed +35 °C, with a lower limit of the ambient air temperature of -5 °C. Annex E provides test requirements for derating the operating current of an accessory when used in ambient temperatures above +35 °C up to +90 °C. Appliance couplers are not suitable for - use in place of plug and socket-outlet systems according to IEC 60884-1. - use in place of devices for connecting luminaires (DCLs) according to IEC 61995 or 306 luminaire supporting couplers (LSCs). 307 NOTE Requirements for d.c. are under consideration.

This clause of IEC 60321-l is replaced as follows: This standard is applicable to: - two-pole interconnection couplers for a.c. only, with and without earthing contact, with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V and a rated current not exceeding 10 A, for household and similar appliances and equipment and intended for the interconnection of the electrical supply to electrical appliances or equipment for 50 Hz or 60 Hz supply . - interconnection cord sets incorporating plug connectors of such interconnection couplers. Appliance outlets integratea in or incorporatea in appliances or other equipment are within the scope of this standard. The dimensional and general requirements of this stanaard apply to such outlets, but certain tests may not be relevant. The requirements for plug connectors are based on the assumption that the temperature of the socket contacts of the corresponding appliance outlets does not exceed 65 C (cold conditions) . Interconnection couplers complying with this standard are suitable for use at ambient temperatures not normally exceeding 25 C, but occasionally reaching 35 C. Interconnection couplers complying with the standard sheets in this standard are intended for the interconnection of appliances or equipment having no special protection against moisture; for the interconnection of other appliances or equipment and of an appliance or equipment which is subject to spillage of liquid in normal use, additional requirements are necessary. Special constructions may be required: - in locations where special conditions prevail as, for example, in ships, vehicles and the like; - in hazardous locations, for example, where explosions are liable to occur.

This standard specifies requirements for cord sets for household and similar general purpose equipment. It does not apply to cord sets for industrial purposes (with plugs and connectors according to HD 196:Plugs, socket-outlets and couplers for industrial purposes), nor to cord extension sets. It reads: Although electrical supply flexes provided with rewirable plugs and connectors are not "cord sets" in the sense of this standard, but considered as being similar to "cord sets" and serving the same purpose, it is recommended to apply the requirements as specified in this standard to such assemblies as well as far as is reasonable.

This clause of EN 60 320 Part 1 is replaced as follows: This standard is applicable to special purpose appliance couplers for household sewing machines. These sewing machine couplers are for a.c. only and have a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V and a rated current not exceeding 2.5 A. The sewing machine couplers may include two or more contacts depending on the control components or circuitry required to operate the sewing machine and may be with or without earthing contact.
