ISO/TC 17/SC 20 - General technical delivery conditions, sampling and mechanical testing methods
Standardization of general technical delivery conditions, inspection documents and general rules for selection and preparation of samples and test pieces for mechanical testing of wrought steels.
General Information
This document specifies a method of converting room temperature percentage elongations after fracture obtained on various proportional and non-proportional gauge lengths to other gauge lengths. Formula (1), on which conversions are based, is considered to be reliable when applied to carbon, carbon manganese, molybdenum and chromium molybdenum steels within the tensile strength range 300 N/mm2 to 700 N/mm2 and in the hot-rolled, hot-rolled and normalized or annealed conditions, with or without tempering. These conversions are not applicable to: a) cold reduced steels; b) quenched and tempered steels; c) austenitic steels. These conversions are not applicable when the gauge length exceeds or where the width to thickness ratio of the test piece exceeds 20.

This document specifies a method of converting room temperature percentage elongations after fracture obtained on various proportional and non-proportional gauge lengths to other gauge lengths. Formula (1), on which conversions are based, is considered to be reliable when applied to austenitic stainless steels within the tensile strength range 450 to 750 N/mm2 and in the solution treated condition. These conversions are not applicable to: a) cold reduced steels; b) quenched and tempered steels; c) non-austenitic steels. These conversions are not applicable when the gauge length exceeds 25√S0 or where the width to thickness ratio of the test piece exceeds 20.

ISO 377:2017 specifies requirements for the identification, location and preparation of samples and test pieces intended for mechanical tests on steel sections, bars, rod, flat products and tubular products as defined in ISO 6929. If agreed in the order, ISO 377:2017 can also apply to other metallic products. These samples and test pieces are for use in tests that are carried out in conformity with the methods specified in the product or material standard or, in the absence of this, in the standard for the test method. Where the requirements of the order or product standard differ from those given in ISO 377:2017, then the requirements of the order or product standard apply.

ISO 404:2013 specifies the general technical delivery requirements for all steel products covered by ISO 6929, with the exception of steel castings and powder metallurgical products. ISO 10474 describes the inspection documents to be used. Where the delivery requirements agreed upon for the order or specified in the appropriate product or material standard differ from the general technical delivery requirements defined in ISO 404:2013, then it is the requirements agreed for ordering or specified in the appropriate product or material standard that apply.

ISO 10474:2013 defines the different types of inspection documents supplied to the purchaser, in accordance with the requirements of the order, for the delivery of steel products. ISO 10474:2013 is to be used in conjunction with other International Standards which specify the general technical delivery conditions: ? for steel and steel products, see ISO 404; ? for steel castings, see ISO 4990.

Specifies conversion bands for hardness scales for Vickers/Brinell (steel ball and hardmetal ball), and Vickers/Rockwell (scales A, B, C and D). This conversion bands only apply to non-alloy and low-alloy steels for products of homogeneous structure and of thickness equal to or greater than the figure given in the relevant test standard. In cases of dispute the hardness value obtained from the hardness test should be used. Converted hardness values shall not be used as a basis for rejection of the steel.
