General Information
This document specifies fundamental requirements and their test methods for unglazed spectacle frames designed for use with prescription lenses. It is applicable to spectacle frames at the point of sale by the manufacturer or supplier to the retailer. This document is applicable to: — all mass-produced spectacle frame types, including rimless mounts, semi-rimless mounts and folding spectacle frames; — spectacle frames made with additive manufacturing, for example, 3D printing; — spectacle frames made from natural organic materials; — the frame or mount of clip-ons designed specifically for attachment to particular models of spectacle frame, but not to their lenses or filters to which ISO 16034 or ISO 12312-1 apply; — prescription inserts designed for attachment to particular models of, for example, eye protector, sunglass or diving mask. Parts of this document are applicable to custom-made frames – see 3.1.3 and Table 1. NOTE See Annex A for recommendations on the design of spectacle frames and terms to be used when describing metal frames. This document is not applicable to spectacle frames used in eye protection, where ISO 16321-1 applies, or to sunglasses with afocal filters, where ISO 12312-1 applies.

This document specifies a measuring system for spectacle frames and related vocabulary. It is applicable to spectacle frames with fronts that are intended to be symmetrical.

ISO 12870:2016 specifies fundamental requirements for unglazed spectacle frames designed for use with all prescription lenses. It is applicable to frames at the point of sale by the manufacturer or supplier to the retailer. This International Standard is applicable to all spectacle frame types, including rimless mounts, semi-rimless mounts and folding spectacle frames. It is also applicable to spectacle frames made from natural organic materials. NOTE See Annex A for recommendations on the design of spectacle frames. ISO 12870:2016 is not applicable to complete custom-made spectacle frames or to products designed specifically to provide personal eye protection.

ISO 11381:2016 specifies requirements for ISO metric screw threads for use with spectacle frames. Provision is made for screw threads of the following nominal sizes: S0,8 × 0,2; M1,0 × 0,25; M1,2 × 0,25; M1,4 × 0,3; M1,6 × 0,35 and M2,0 × 0,4 and for related taps and gauges.

ISO 7998:2005 defines commonly used terms relating to frames for spectacles and eyeglasses and lists equivalent terms in English, French, Russian, German, Italian, Spanish, American English, Japanese (with phonetic transcription) and Chinese for parts of such frames.

ISO/TS 24348:2014 specifies methods for accelerated wear and corrosion, to be used prior to the detection of nickel release from coated metal and combination spectacle frames, and for detecting the release of nickel from those parts of metal and combination spectacle frames, whether coated or not, intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin, in order to determine whether such parts release nickel at a rate greater than 0,5 µg/cm2/week.

ISO/TS 24348:2007 aims to control those spectacle frames that, if produced with materials and/or surface treatments containing nickel, can be worn by nickel-sensitized persons.

ISO 12870:2004 is applicable to spectacle frames made from natural organic materials. It is not applicable to complete custom-made spectacle frames or to products designed specifically to provide personal eye protection.

Spectrales frames and parts thereof are procedured in large numbers worldwide. In order to facilitate mutual understanding and avoid the use of inappropriate or incorrect terms, the standard defines terms relating to frames for spectacles and eyeglasses in English and French, and lists equivalent terms in (British and American) English, French, Russian, German, Italian and spanish. It does not include terms for measuring systems, formers and edging machines, and it does not apply to goggles.
