Overview

ASTM D8061-21 is the internationally recognized standard practice for the handling, transportation, and storage of 2-Bromo-3,3,3-Trifluoro-1-Propene (2-BTP, CF₃CBr=CH₂). This guideline, developed by ASTM International, serves suppliers, reclaimers, purchasers, and users across commercial and military sectors. Its primary goal is to ensure that 2-BTP-used for fire suppression and inerting-maintains its physical properties throughout distribution, from manufacturing to end use, without degradation or contamination.

Key Topics

  • Safe Handling Procedures
Personnel managing 2-BTP must be properly trained, following both the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and U.S. DOT 49 CFR regulations. This includes recognizing the product’s characteristics and safe practices for handling full, partially full, or empty containers.

  • Container Integrity
All containers for 2-BTP must be free of contamination, emptied of moisture and air before filling, and kept free of dirt or substances that can degrade the chemical.

  • Prevention of Hazardous Situations
2-BTP must be handled in well-ventilated, non-smoking areas, away from high-temperature surfaces, to prevent hazardous accumulation or decomposition. Fill levels must allow for thermal expansion up to 130 °F (54 °C).

  • Transportation Requirements
2-BTP is generally not classified as hazardous under DOT Title 49 CFR, unless containers are super-pressurized. Transportation methods should protect containers from shock, vibration, and extreme temperatures. Containers may need insulation if subjected to harsh transit conditions.

  • Storage Recommendations
Containers must be stored to prevent environmental and physical damage, as well as tampering. Proper labeling is essential to distinguish between material that conforms to ASTM D8060 and non-conforming material. Segregation of compliant and non-compliant 2-BTP is emphasized.

  • Inspection & Reclamation Reclaimed 2-BTP must meet the requirements of ASTM D8060 for reissue. Non-compliant material is to be processed further until it conforms to the standards.

Applications

2-Bromo-3,3,3-Trifluoro-1-Propene (2-BTP) is primarily utilized for:

  • Fire Suppression and Explosion Prevention
Employed in both commercial and military fire extinguishing systems due to its effectiveness and stability.

  • Distribution and Supply Chain Operations
Ensuring safety and regulatory compliance during shipping by road, rail, air, or water.

  • Reclamation and Recycling
Procedures for reclaiming and safely handling recycled 2-BTP are vital for environmental and supply chain sustainability.

This standard is significant for manufacturers, logistics providers, fire safety professionals, and anyone involved in the lifecycle of 2-BTP as a fire suppressant, ensuring both workplace safety and environmental protection.
