Standard Guide for Application of Asphalt-Based Protection Board

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This guide outlines general procedures for the storage and application of semi-rigid protection board to below-grade and below wearing surface waterproofing. The proper application is necessary to prevent damage to the waterproofing membrane during backfilling, paving, or other construction operations, as well as to minimize the effects of soil stresses.
4.2 This guide is intended to supplement instructions from designers and manufacturers.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide lists minimum application and installation requirements for semi-rigid protection board when used as protection for below-grade or below wearing surface (like plaza decks) waterproofing.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific precautionary statements, see Section 8.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM D6451/D6451M-99(2021): Standard Guide for Application of Asphalt-Based Protection Board provides essential guidance for the storage, application, and installation of semi-rigid asphalt-based protection boards. These protection boards are primarily used as a safeguard for below-grade and below wearing surface waterproofing systems, such as those found in plaza decks and foundations. Proper installation is critical to prevent damage during backfilling, paving, or other construction operations and to minimize adverse effects from soil stresses.

This international standard was developed in line with globally recognized principles, ensuring compatibility and quality for construction projects requiring reliable waterproofing protection.

Key Topics

  • Minimum Application and Installation Requirements
The guide specifies the essential steps and quality controls for installing semi-rigid asphalt-based protection boards over waterproofing membranes.

  • Storage and Handling Procedures

    • Store protection boards horizontally in original packaging to prevent deformation.
    • Protect from direct sunlight, precipitation, dust, and other contaminants.
    • Store adhesives and mastics as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Material Compatibility

    • Only use adhesives, mastics, and tapes recommended by waterproofing membrane manufacturers.
    • Ensure full material compatibility to avoid compromising the waterproofing system.
  • Safety and Environmental Practices

    • Store and handle flammable materials safely, away from open flames or spark-producing equipment.
    • Install protection boards under conditions recommended by suppliers to ensure quality and safety.
  • Installation Practices

    • Boards must be installed within 24 hours of waterproofing membrane application or once the membrane is fully cured and, if flood tested, after the surface is clean and dry.
    • Apply boards in a “common bond brick pattern” with tightly butted joints, ensuring no unprotected areas remain.
    • Maximum allowable gap between boards is 3 mm (1/8 in.).
    • Special precautions are outlined for inside/outside angles, penetrations, and areas with protrusions or drains.
  • Inspection and Repair

    • Inspect applications to ensure complete waterproofing protection before any backfilling or surfacing.
    • Promptly cover any unprotected areas.

Applications

ASTM D6451/D6451M is widely used across construction projects involving waterproofing systems, offering practical value in:

  • Below-Grade Waterproofing
    • Foundations and basement walls benefit from added protection against soil pressure and construction activities.
  • Plaza Decks and Parking Structures
    • Safeguarding horizontal waterproofing membranes below walking or driving surfaces.
  • Roofing and Waterproofing Renovations
    • Supplementing manufacturer and designer installation guidelines for new applications or repairs.
  • Civil Infrastructure
    • Protecting critical water-resistant membranes in tunnels, retaining walls, and similar structures.

By following ASTM D6451/D6451M, construction teams help prolong the life of waterproofing systems, prevent avoidable membrane damage, and ensure long-term structural integrity.
