ASTM B85/B85M-18e1
(Specification)Standard Specification for Aluminum-Alloy Die Castings
Standard Specification for Aluminum-Alloy Die Castings
ABSTRACT
This specification covers aluminum-alloy die castings of all compositions. Unless otherwise specified, only aluminum alloy conforming to the requirements of Specification B 179 or producer's foundry scrap shall be used in the remelting furnace from which molten metal is taken for pouring directly into castings. Additions of small amounts of modifiers and grain refining elements or alloys are permitted. Pure materials, recycled materials, and master alloys and material not conforming to Specification B 179 may be used to make alloys conforming to this specification, provided chemical analysis can be taken and adjusted to conform to the chemical requirements prior to pouring any castings. The castings shall be supplied such that they can be laid out and machined to the final dimensions specified on the blueprints or drawings.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers aluminum-alloy die castings designated as shown in Table 1.
1.2 This specification is for aluminum-alloy die castings used in general purpose applications. It may not address the mechanical properties, integrity testing, and verification required for highly loaded or safety critical applications.
1.3 Alloy and temper designations are in accordance with ANSI H35.1/H35.1(M).
1.4 Unless the order specifies the “M” specification designation, the material shall be furnished to the inch-pound units.
1.5 For acceptance criteria for inclusion of new aluminum and aluminum alloys and their properties in this specification, see Annex A1 and Annex A2.
1.6 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.8 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
