STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS
FOR
ACID-RESISTING ASPHALT MASTIC'
A.S.T.M. Designation: D 223 - 30
These specifications are issued under the fixed designation D 223; the final
number indicates the year of original adoption as standard or, in the case of revision,
the year of last revision.
ISSUED AS TENTATIVE, 1925; ADOPTED, 1930.
Scope. I. (a) These specifications cover the materials for asphalt mastic
suitable for use in waterproofing, consisting of mastic cake, asphalt
cement and mineral aggregate.
(b) The grade of asphalt mastic covered by these specifications
is suitable for waterproofing, tank linings, floors, etc., where dilute
mineral acids at temperatures below 100° F. (38° C.) are encountered.
Properties. 2. This asphalt is a mixture of mastic cake, asphalt cement and
mineral aggregate, which at a temperature of approximately 205° C.
( 400° F .) is sufficiently plastic to be poured into place and compressed
with a wooden trowel or equivalent tool into a compact mass.
As used for strictly waterproofing purposes the mastic cake,
asphalt cement and mineral aggregate are combined under heat and
manual stirring in substantially the following proportions by weight:
Mastic Calce . 48 per cent
Asphalt Cement. 5 "
Mineral Aggregate . 47
Mastic Cake. 3. (a) The mastic cake shall conform to the following require­
ments:
Weight per cake . not more than 80 lb.
Soluble in pure benzol. . 14 to 18 per cent by weight
Insoluble in pure benzol. . 82 to 86 per cent by weight
(b) The matter soluble in pure benzol shall be asphalt cement,
which, after recovery from the mastic cake, shall conform to the
requirements of the Tentative Specifications for Asphalt Cement, 25
