General Information
Overview
EN 14701-3:2006 specifies a laboratory method for determining the compressibility of sludges, a key filtration property used in sludge characterization. The standard applies to conditioned or unconditioned sludges and sludge suspensions from stormwater systems, urban wastewater collection and treatment, industrial wastewaters similar to urban wastewater (Directive 91/271/EEC), and water supply treatment plants - and can be applied to sludges from other origins. Results help define suitable operating pressures for filtration and support scale-up and performance evaluation of full-scale filtration devices.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Principle: Measure the specific resistance to filtration (r) at different applied pressures (p) and derive compressibility from the pressure dependence of r.
- Test procedure: Follow the specific-resistance test defined in EN 14701-2; perform measurements at a minimum of three pressures. Suggested pressures: 50 kPa, 150 kPa, 500 kPa.
- Result expression: Calculate the compressibility coefficient (s) from the slope of a log-log plot of r versus p (s is the slope obtained from log r vs. log p). Equation forms and a two-point calculation method are provided in the standard.
- Interpretation: Values of s > 1 indicate that specific resistance increases more than proportionally with pressure - suggesting operation at high pressures is not advisable.
- Apparatus and precision: The filtration apparatus and precision requirements reference EN 14701-2. Precision of compressibility results is tied to the precision of the specific-resistance measurements.
- Test report: Required content includes reference to the standard, sample identification, method reference, test results, and any deviations or factors affecting results.
Applications
- Process optimization: Select the best pressure range for belt presses, vacuum filters, plate-and-frame filters, and centrifuge feed conditioning.
- Design and scale-up: Use compressibility data with specific resistance results to predict full-scale filtration performance and cake formation behavior.
- Quality control and R&D: Compare sludge behavior before/after conditioning (polymer dosing, dewatering aids) and assess treatment changes.
- Stakeholders: Environmental laboratories, wastewater treatment operators, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, and regulatory bodies.
