FprEN 17752 is a CEN draft European Standard for inorganic fertilizers. It specifies which analytical methods to use for determining nitrification inhibiting compounds and urease inhibiting compounds, so laboratories and fertilizer producers can check these substances in practice. It does not apply to fertilizing product blends.

What does FprEN 17752 specify?

FprEN 17752 specifies references to methods for determining specific inhibiting compounds in inorganic fertilizers. It organizes the subject into sampling, sample preparation, nitrification inhibitor determination, urease inhibitor determination, and an informative Annex ZA linking the standard to EU fertilising-product legislation.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ZARelationship between FprEN 17752 and the essential requirements of Regulation (EU) 2019/1009

The scope is limited to inorganic fertilizers, so users should not apply it to fertilizing product blends. In practice, that matters when choosing the right test route for a product formulation before reporting results or assessing conformity.

What are the key requirements of FprEN 17752?

FprEN 17752 is mainly a reference standard: it tells users which clauses and which separate EN methods to apply for each compound. The most important practical point is that it does not create one new test method for all inhibitors, but points to existing HPLC-based methods for each named substance.

Sampling and sample preparation

Clause 4 says sampling is not part of the method in this document. It also stresses that the laboratory sample must be representative and not altered during transport or storage, and that sample preparation shall follow EN 1482-2:2024. That means the analytical result depends on getting a proper sample to the lab before any measurement begins.

Nitrification inhibiting compounds

Clause 5.1 lists the nitrification inhibiting compounds covered: dicyandiamide, 3-methylpyrazole (MP), 1H-1,2,4-triazole, 3,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole phosphate (DMPP), and 2-(3,4-dimethyl-pyrazol-1-yl)-succinic acid (DMPSA). Each one is measured by a named EN method, so the user selects the right reference method for the compound present in the fertilizer.

For DMPP and DMPSA, the cited methods report results in mg/kg, while Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 expects a mass fraction in %. The document gives the conversion note, which matters when a laboratory result is used for regulatory reporting or product declarations.

Urease inhibiting compounds

Clause 5.2 covers urease inhibiting compounds. It points to methods for N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), N-(2-nitrophenyl)phosphoric triamide (2-NPT), and the combined determination of NBPT and N-(n-propyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NPPT). In practice, this lets a lab choose whether it needs a single-compound result or a combined determination.

EU conformity link

Annex ZA maps Clause 4 and Clause 5 to the essential safety requirements in Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 for PFC 1 inorganic fertilizers. That link matters for manufacturers and conformity assessment because it shows which parts of the standard support presumption of conformity when the standard is cited in the OJEU.

What terms does FprEN 17752 define?

FprEN 17752 uses the terms and definitions from EN 12944-1 and EN 12944-2. The document also relies on a set of named compounds and abbreviations that are central to the test scope.

  • HPLC - High-performance liquid chromatography, the analytical technique used by the cited determination methods.
  • NBPT - N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide, a urease inhibiting compound covered by the document.
  • NPPT - N-(n-propyl)thiophosphoric triamide, determined together with NBPT in one cited method.
  • 2-NPT - N-(2-nitrophenyl)phosphoric triamide, a urease inhibiting compound covered for urea and urea-containing fertilizers.
  • MP - 3-methylpyrazole, one of the nitrification inhibiting compounds covered.
  • DMPP - 3,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole phosphate, a nitrification inhibiting compound with a conversion note for regulatory reporting.
  • DMPSA - 2-(3,4-dimethyl-pyrazol-1-yl)-succinic acid, a nitrification inhibiting compound covered by a separate HPLC method.

Who uses FprEN 17752?

FprEN 17752 is used by laboratories, fertilizer manufacturers, and conformity assessment teams that need to measure inhibitor content in inorganic fertilizers. It is also relevant to quality managers and buyers who specify test methods in contracts or product release procedures. The document supports work tied to EU fertilising-product compliance, especially for products in PFC 1(C).

What changed in FprEN 17752 from the previous edition?

FprEN 17752 will supersede CEN/TS 17752:2022. Compared with that edition, the foreword states these changes: the Technical Specification has been adopted as a European Standard with Annex ZA added, the scope has been updated regarding fertilizing product blends, and the normative references and bibliography have been updated.

Which standards are used with FprEN 17752?

FprEN 17752 relies on several cited standards for definitions, sampling, sample preparation, and compound-specific testing. EN 1482-2:2024 provides general sample preparation provisions, while EN 12944-1 and EN 12944-2 provide the vocabulary used in the document. The compound methods are EN 15360, EN 15688, EN 15905, EN 16024, EN 16075, EN 16328, EN 16651, and EN 17090, all based on HPLC.

The bibliography also points to EN 1482-1 and EN 1482-3 for recommended sampling approaches. In practice, that helps users build a complete sampling and test workflow even though sampling itself is not part of the method in Clause 4.

What does the FprEN 17752 document contain?

FprEN 17752 is structured as a short referencing standard rather than a full laboratory method. It contains a scope, normative references, vocabulary, sampling and sample-preparation guidance, the list of nitrification and urease inhibiting compounds with the corresponding EN test methods, and Annex ZA linking the standard to Regulation (EU) 2019/1009. The bibliography adds the EU regulation and the companion sampling standards.
