General Information
Overview
CEN/TS 17752:2022 is a European Technical Specification developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that outlines standardized methods for determining specific inhibitors in inorganic fertilizers. This document primarily focuses on the quantitative analysis of nitrification inhibitors and urease inhibitors, which are critical additives used to enhance fertilizer efficacy and reduce environmental impact.
This standard applies specifically to inorganic fertilizers classified under EU fertilizing product function categories (PFC) 1(C) and 7, provided that the product blends adhere to compositions specified by Regulation (EU) 2019/1009. By offering harmonized testing methods, CEN/TS 17752:2022 supports compliance with EU safety and quality requirements for fertilizing products.
Key Topics
Scope: Specifies methods for detecting and quantifying nitrification inhibitors and urease inhibitors in inorganic fertilizers within defined EU PFC categories.
Sampling and Sample Preparation: Ensures representative sampling according to EN 1482 series, including sampling of static heaps and proper sample preparation techniques to maintain accuracy in testing.
Nitrification Inhibitors Determination: Methods included for the analysis of:
- Dicyandiamide (EN 15360:2007)
- 3-Methylpyrazole (MP) (EN 15905:2010)
- 1H-1,2,4-Triazole (EN 16024:2011)
- 3,4-Dimethyl-1H-pyrazole phosphate (DMPP) (EN 16328:2012)
- 2-(3,4-Dimethyl-pyrazol-1-yl)-succinic acid (DMPSA) (EN 17090:2018)
These inhibitors slow down the nitrification process, minimizing nitrogen loss through leaching and greenhouse gas emissions.
Urease Inhibitors Determination: Covers methods for measuring:
- N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) (EN 15688:2008)
- N-(2-nitrophenyl)phosphoric triamide (2-NPT) (EN 16075:2011)
- Both NBPT and N-(n-propyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NPPT) together (EN 16651:2015)
These inhibitors reduce ammonia volatilization from urea-based fertilizers, improving nitrogen use efficiency.
Regulatory Compliance: Assists manufacturers and laboratories in aligning their product testing with the Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, which governs the market placement and safety criteria for fertilizing products in the European Union.
Applications
Quality Control in Fertilizer Production: Enables consistent and accurate testing to verify the presence and concentration of specific inhibitors, ensuring product reliability and performance.
Regulatory Certification: Facilitates compliance with EU fertilizing product regulations, helping manufacturers meet legal standards for market authorization.
Environmental Impact Mitigation: Supports the use of inhibitors that reduce nitrogen losses to the environment, contributing to sustainable agriculture and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Research and Development: Provides standardized analytical methods to evaluate new inhibitor formulations or fertilizer blends for effectiveness and safety.
Agricultural Stakeholders: Assists agronomists, regulators, and quality assurance professionals in monitoring fertilizer inputs and optimizing nutrient management strategies.
