Overview

EN 848-3:2007/prA1 is a CEN draft amendment to EN 848-3:2007 covering the safety of one‑side moulding woodworking machines with rotating tools - Part 3: numerically controlled (NC) boring and routing machines. The prA1 amendment (intended to be consolidated as EN 848-3:2007+A1:2009) updates normative references, marking and instruction requirements, ergonomics/handling guidance and adds informative linkage to the EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). This document is aimed at manufacturers, designers, safety engineers and compliance officers responsible for NC boring and routing machines used in woodworking.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and status: Amendment to EN 848-3:2007 prepared by CEN/TC 142; submitted for unique acceptance and intended to be consolidated into EN 848-3:2007+A1:2009.
  • Normative references: Replaces EN 294:1992 with EN ISO 13857:2008 (safety distances to prevent reach of hazard zones by upper/lower limbs).
  • Ergonomics & handling: Adds requirements to position attachments so they cannot overturn, fall or move uncontrolled during transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping.
  • Marking: Clarifies mandatory details - manufacturer name/address, year of construction (when manufacturing completed) and machine designation/series.
  • Instruction handbook: Expanded content requirements including noise information for sales literature, lifetime conditions to prevent overturn/fall, emergency/accident operation methods (including safe unblocking procedures), and specification of spare parts affecting safety.
  • Safety systems mapped to EU law: Annex ZB links clauses of the standard to the Essential Requirements of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, covering control systems, guards, emergency stop, stability, protection against moving parts, energy isolation and maintenance/access.

Applications and users

  • Machine manufacturers and OEMs - integrate requirements into design, production, marking and manuals to support CE conformity.
  • Safety and compliance engineers - use the standard for risk assessment, guard selection, control design and verification against the Machinery Directive.
  • Procurement and maintenance teams - assess machine suitability, service instructions, spare‑parts specifications and lifetime handling requirements.
  • Test labs and notified bodies - reference the standard when assessing conformity to EU essential requirements.

Related standards and references

  • EN 848-3:2007 (base document) and the planned consolidation EN 848-3:2007+A1:2009
  • EN ISO 13857:2008 (safety distances)
  • EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (Essential Requirements)

This amendment reinforces safety, documentation and conformity pathways for NC boring and routing woodworking machines - essential for CE marking, safe operation and lifecycle handling.
