Overview
EN 2584:2019 - Aerospace series - specifies the characteristics, dimensions and loads for spherical plain bearings made from corrosion resisting steel with a self‑lubricating liner. It applies to the narrow series bearings designed for elevated load at ambient temperature and intended for use in fixed or moving aircraft structure and control mechanisms. Bearings covered by the standard may be supplied with or without swaging groove and are rated for service in the temperature range −55 °C to +163 °C.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & configuration
- Narrow series spherical plain bearings for aerospace elevated-load applications; dimensions given in Figures 1–2 and Table 1 (values in mm after surface treatment).
- Dimensions, tolerances and mass
- Detailed nominal sizes, tolerances (per ISO 1132-1 definitions) and mass per piece listed in Table 1.
- Surface roughness
- Surface finish requirements shown in the figures; roughness values apply before surface treatment.
- Loads and starting torques
- Permissible static and dynamic loads and recommended starting torques are provided in Table 2. Note: bearings with swaging grooves can have reduced push‑out loads compared to groove‑free types.
- Materials
- Inner ring: steel per EN 2030 (hardness 55–62 HRC).
- Outer ring: steel per EN 3161 (hardness 28–37 HRC before swaging).
- Liner: self‑lubricating, low‑friction, wear‑resistant material meeting EN 2755.
- Surface treatment
- Inner ring surface options: chromium plating (EN 2132, 15–50 µm) code “P”, passivation (ISO 8075) code “T”, or none.
- Designation and marking
- Marking per EN 2424; technology codes for liner bonding/injection are defined.
- Quality & qualification
- Manufacturer must operate an approved aerospace production organisation and maintain an aerospace QMS (e.g., EN 9100) and use recognized qualification procedures (e.g., EN 9133) for standard products.
Applications and users
- Typical users: aerospace OEMs, aircraft component designers, bearing manufacturers and suppliers, procurement and quality managers, and test/qualification laboratories.
- Practical uses: specifying replacement or new bearings for control linkages, flight control surfaces, landing gear attachments, and other moving or fixed joints where corrosion resistance and self‑lubrication are required under elevated loads at ambient conditions.
