Overview

EN 3475-408:2005 - Aerospace series: Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 408: Fire resistance - specifies a reproducible method to evaluate the fire resistance of fire-proof electrical cables for aircraft. Prepared under AECMA and adopted by CEN (approved September 2005), the standard defines specimen preparation, test apparatus, test procedures and pass/fail electrical requirements to verify continuity and insulation during combined flame and vibration exposure.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Specimens
    • Six test specimens selected at random; minimum length 0.75 m.
    • Centre section immersion: 0.5 m length for 24 h in one of the test fluids.
  • Test fluids (per EN 3909)
    • Aircraft fuel (kerosene), hydraulic fluid (phosphate base), lubricant (synthetic oil), isopropyl alcohol (cleaner), de‑icing fluid (ethylene glycol).
  • Apparatus
    • Required: burner, test fixture, and test fluids.
    • Burner requirements (ISO 2685 Annex A or equivalent):
      • Minimum burner width 50 mm; cable exposed length 152 mm.
      • Flame temperature (1100 ± 80) °C.
      • Heat flux to calorimeter (116 ± 10) kW/m².
      • Flame base width ≥ 2× cable diameter.
    • Test fixture: vibrating frame, vibration perpendicular to cable axis at (30 ± 5) Hz and minimum acceleration 4 g.
    • Mechanical arrangement: sample wrapped once with two nickel‑chrome ribbons; ribbons inner edges spaced (25 ± 5) mm.
  • Electrical setup and acceptance
    • Line current approx. 2 A; a test switch should indicate 25 mA when depressed.
    • Leakage current must not exceed 12.5 mA during test (equivalent to ~10 000 Ω insulation resistance).
    • Continuous monitoring of continuity and insulation resistance before, during and after test.
  • Test duration
    • 5 minutes for fire‑resistant cables.
    • 15 minutes for fire‑proof cables.
  • Circuit arrangements
    • Diagrams and procedures provided for single‑core, multi‑core and screened cables to verify core‑to‑core and core‑to‑screen integrity.

Applications and users

  • Cable and wire manufacturers validating fire‑resistant/aerospace cable designs.
  • Aerospace test laboratories performing certification or qualification testing.
  • Aircraft OEMs, suppliers, procurement and quality engineers requiring compliance evidence.
  • Certification bodies and maintainers verifying in‑service cable integrity and safety.
  • Useful for designers specifying cable systems in designated fire zones of aircraft.

Related standards

  • ISO 2685:1998 - Environmental test procedure for airborne equipment - Resistance to fire in designated fire zones (burner and calorimeter references).
