Overview

EN 4612-011:2019 is a CEN product standard in the aerospace series that specifies the characteristics of XLETFE family electrical cables with a UV laser printable jacket and nickel‑plated copper conductors. It covers single- and multi‑core jacketed (non‑screened) assemblies intended for aircraft onboard electrical systems operating between −65 °C and 150 °C and at voltages up to 600 V. The insulation/jacket system is crosslinked ETFE (XLETFE) with a dual‑extruded wall for open applications and is suitable for airframe use without additional protection.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Construction
    • Cores: nickel‑plated copper, 2 to 4 cores, twisted per EN 2235; filler cores not permitted.
    • Outer jacket: XLETFE, UV laser printable, minimum thickness 0.15 mm.
    • Dual extruded wall for external/open applications.
  • Electrical and mechanical data
    • Designed for typical aerospace systems (examples noted: 115 V phase‑to‑neutral 400 Hz AC and 28 V DC); verification for other systems is the user's responsibility.
    • Maximum operating voltage: 600 V.
    • Tableed conductor sizes, diameters, mass and DC resistance are provided (see standard Table 1).
  • Testing and performance
    • Referenced test methods largely from EN 3475‑100 and EN 2235.
    • Applicable tests include visual, mass, dimensions, ohmic resistance, accelerated ageing (200 ± 3 °C), shrinkage/delamination (150 ± 5 °C), thermal shock (−65 °C / 150 °C), cold bend (−65 ± 2 °C), bending, flammability (flame 15 s; extinguish ≤ 3 s), resistance to fluids (volume swell ≤ 10 %), humidity resistance (90 °C, 672 h), tensile properties of extruded materials (TS ≥ 35 MPa, Eb ≥ 75 %), flexure endurance (mandrel Ø15 mm, 0.75 kg, 750 cycles), strippability and laser markability (contrast K ≥ 50 %).
  • Quality and marking
    • Quality assurance per EN 9133.
    • Identification, colour coding and designation formats per EN 4612‑002 and EN 2235.

Applications and users

  • Intended for aerospace airframe wiring harnesses where high temperature range, UV laser marking for traceability, and robust XLETFE jackets are required.
  • Primary users:
    • Cable manufacturers and suppliers producing aviation-grade wiring.
    • Aircraft electrical/system designers and avionics engineers specifying harness materials.
    • Procurement, quality and certification teams verifying compliance for installation and maintenance.
    • MRO and wiring installation teams needing laser‑printable, high‑temperature external cables.
  • Note: users must verify suitability in electrical systems beyond the examples cited.

Related standards

  • EN 4612‑002 (general XLETFE product requirements)
  • EN 4611‑004 (tin plated copper variant)
  • EN 2235 (technical specification for single/multicore screened/jacketed cables)
  • EN 3475‑100 (cable test methods)
  • EN 9133 (quality management and product qualification)

Keywords: EN 4612‑011:2019, aerospace cables, XLETFE, nickel plated copper, UV laser printable, aircraft wiring, operating temperatures −65 °C to 150 °C.
