Overview - EN 14618:2009 (Agglomerated stone - Terminology and classification)

EN 14618:2009 is a CEN European standard that defines the terminology and classification of agglomerated stone products. It covers industrially manufactured stone-like products made mainly from hydraulic cement, resin, or mixtures of both, combined with natural or recycled stone aggregates and other additions. The standard applies to products produced in fixed plants by moulding techniques and placed on the market as rough blocks, slabs, tiles, dimensional stone works, and cut-to-size elements intended primarily for flooring, wall finishes and similar uses. Specific product types such as terrazzo tiles (covered by EN 13748-1 / EN 13748-2) and non-flooring structural uses (drainage channels, structural elements) are excluded.

Key topics and technical terminology

EN 14618:2009 establishes standardized terms and classifications so specifiers, manufacturers and laboratories share a common vocabulary:

  • Definitions: clear meanings for agglomerated stone, agglomerated stone product, block, slab, tile, modular tile, textured upper face slab, special piece.
  • Classification:
    • By binder type: resin-bound, hydraulic cement-bound, or resin/cement mixtures.
    • By mineral nature of aggregates: carbonate, silica, or mixed carbonate/silica aggregates.
  • Aggregates and particle size: terms for natural aggregate, sand (0.06–4 mm), selected/intermediate aggregates, continuous or de-powdered particle size distributions, filler (typically <45 µm).
  • Paste components and additives: binder, organic/inorganic binding paste, filler, pigment, accelerators, initiators (hardeners), inhibitors, putty, impregnating products.
  • Manufacturing process vocabulary: moulding (including vacuum and open-cast), curing (hot/cold), gel time, pot life, calibrating/honing/polishing, sawn, flamed, honed, matt, polished and sand-blasted finishes.
  • Final product dimensions and examples: e.g., modular tile dimensions (≤600 × ≤600 mm) and nominal thickness ranges (6–20 mm).
