Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Castings - Chemical composition of castings for use in contact with foodstuff

This European Standard specifies the maximum percentage content of alloying elements and impurities in aluminium and aluminium alloy cast materials and articles designed to be in contact with food and contains provisions for the demonstration of conformity of products with the present standard.

Overview

EN 601:2004 (CEN) - "Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Castings - Chemical composition of castings for use in contact with foodstuff" specifies the maximum mass content of alloying elements and impurities in aluminium and aluminium-alloy castings and finished articles intended to contact food. The standard defines compositional limits, selection guidance and provisions for the demonstration of conformity so manufacturers and specifiers can ensure safety and regulatory compliance for food-contact applications.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applies to cast aluminium and aluminium-alloy materials and finished articles designed for food contact (ingots, liquid metal and finished goods).
  • Composition limits:
    • Defines aluminium as ≥99.0% by mass with strict limits on other elements (e.g., iron + silicon ≤ 1.0%).
    • Sets maximum element contents for common alloying/impurity elements (Table of maxima includes: Silicon 13.5%, Iron 2.0%, Copper 0.6%, Manganese 4.0%, Magnesium 11.0%, Chromium 0.35%, Nickel 3.0%, Zinc 0.25%, Tin 0.10%, etc.).
    • Limits for "other elements" are conservative (typically 0.05% each, 0.15% total) where food-contact behaviour is less documented.
  • Selection guidance: Clause-based rules (4.1/4.2) require checking alloy composition in EN 1706 against EN 601 requirements. Use of standardized alloys is strongly recommended.
  • Conformity and QA:
    • Manufacturers must operate within a quality assurance system and maintain procedures to control chemical composition and raw material qualification.
    • Emphasis on traceability from raw material to delivered product.
    • Inspection certificate 3.1 per EN 10204:1991 is required to certify conformity (issued per lot, shipment, or up to 12-month intervals by agreement).

Applications and users

  • Intended for manufacturers of cast aluminium cookware, kitchenware, food-processing equipment, pressure-cooking parts, and other articles intended to contact food.
  • Useful to: product designers, materials engineers, quality managers, procurement/specification teams, and regulatory/compliance personnel in food and appliance industries.
  • Practical benefits: Ensures safe chemical composition for food contact, supports supplier qualification, and provides documentation needed for regulatory audits and customer assurance.

Related standards

  • EN 1706 - Aluminium and aluminium alloys: castings - chemical composition and mechanical properties (used to verify alloy composition).
  • EN 10204 - Types of inspection documents (inspection certificate 3.1 referenced for conformity).
