EN 840-6:2012 - Mobile waste and recycling containers - Part 6: Safety and health requirements - Effective Date
- 28-Feb-2018
Overview
EN 840-6:2020 - Mobile waste and recycling containers: Part 6 - Safety and health requirements (CEN) defines essential safety, health and ergonomic requirements for wheeled mobile waste and recycling containers covered by EN 840‑1 to EN 840‑4. It applies to non-hazardous waste containers and complements the performance/test requirements referenced in EN 840‑5:2020. EN 840‑6:2020 was approved by CEN in 2019 and supersedes EN 840‑6:2012.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard focuses on practical safety and ergonomic design measures that reduce injury risk and improve handling:
- Compatibility with lifting devices: Containers must securely fit and automatically lock into approved vehicle lifting devices during tilting and emptying; manual lifting of the container to engage the lifter is not permitted.
- Stability and handling forces: Containers must meet static stability criteria and limit pushing/pulling forces under test conditions (see EN 840‑5). Manufacturers should optimise form, centre of gravity, wheel placement and rolling resistance.
- Handles: Requirements for handle shape, clearance and height (including specified minimum clearances and heights for two- and four-wheeled containers) to ensure two‑handed, safe manoeuvring and avoid sharp edges.
- Wheels and castors: Minimum nominal wheel diameter (typical 200 mm), wheel positioning for low rolling resistance and stability, load endurance against static/dynamic stresses, and rules for swivel/fixed castors on four‑wheel containers.
- Direction blocks and brakes: When fitted, direction blocks and brakes must be applied to specified wheels, be adjustable or self‑compensating, retain containers on a 10° slope and be operable by the user; central locks must be securable against unauthorised unlocking.
- Edges and lids: Prevention of sharp edges (min. radius), lid safety clearances to avoid finger or head entrapment (including child‑safety gap requirements for dome lids), assisted‑lid safeguards and automatic lid‑holding mechanisms.
- Cleaning and maintenance: Design for easy cleaning to maintain hygiene and safe operation.
- Instructions for use: Mandatory information to be supplied with the container (e.g., standard number, volume, permissible mass, wheel diameter/type, braking details, pulling force and essential dimensions).
Applications and users
EN 840‑6:2020 is intended for:
