EN 840-6:2020 - Mobile waste and recycling containers: Part 6 - Safety and health requirements (CEN) defines essential safety, health and ergonomic requirements for wheeled mobile waste and recycling containers covered by EN 840‑1 to EN 840‑4. It applies to non-hazardous waste containers and complements the performance/test requirements referenced in EN 840‑5:2020. EN 840‑6:2020 was approved by CEN in 2019 and supersedes EN 840‑6:2012.

• Direction blocks and brakes: When fitted, direction blocks and brakes must be applied to specified wheels, be adjustable or self‑compensating, retain containers on a 10° slope and be operable by the user; central locks must be securable against unauthorised unlocking.
• Edges and lids: Prevention of sharp edges (min. radius), lid safety clearances to avoid finger or head entrapment (including child‑safety gap requirements for dome lids), assisted‑lid safeguards and automatic lid‑holding mechanisms.
• Cleaning and maintenance: Design for easy cleaning to maintain hygiene and safe operation.
• Instructions for use: Mandatory information to be supplied with the container (e.g., standard number, volume, permissible mass, wheel diameter/type, braking details, pulling force and essential dimensions).

management”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by October 2020, and conflicting national standards shall
be withdrawn at the latest by October 2020.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
This document supersedes EN 840-6:2012.

1 Scope
This document provides the essential safety, health and ergonomic requirements for mobile waste and
recycling containers according to EN 840-1:2020 to EN 840-4:2020, not including hazardous wastes
containers.

4 General requirements of construction
4.1 The container shall be constructed so that when it is unloaded or loaded with a nominal mass, it
has a secure fit on an approved compatible lifting device and shall be automatically locked safely into
the lifting device during the tilting and emptying operation. The container shall be in static stability
according to 4.8 of EN 840-5:2020.
4.2 The container shall be safely fitted to the lifting device of the vehicle without being carried or
lifted manually.
