EN 840-3:2020 - “Mobile waste and recycling containers - Part 3” specifies the dimensions and design requirements for mobile waste and recycling containers with 4 wheels and dome lid(s), with nominal capacities up to 1 300 L, intended specifically for use with trunnion and/or comb lifting devices. The standard defines functional and safety dimensions, construction and marking rules, and interfaces to ensure interchangeability and safe operation with compatible lifting equipment.

• Scope and approval: Applies only to containers approved for trunnion and/or comb lifting devices; containers must fit and lock automatically into approved lifting devices.
• Volumes and classes:
  • Class I (small): up to 1 000 L
  • Class II (large): 1 000 L to 1 300 L
  • Identified nominal volumes: 770 L, 1 000 L, 1 100 L, 1 300 L (±5% tolerance per EN 840-5).
• Functional dimensions: Manufacturers must respect the critical functional dimensions listed in the standard (Table 1). Drawings are illustrative; specified functional dimensions are compulsory to ensure compatibility.
• Lid and handle design:
  • Dome lids must fully cover openings, have at least two fixing points and at least one means of opening by the lifting device.
  • Front handles dimensions and positions are specified to protect operators (handles over trunnion: 10 mm less than Table 1 value N°33).
• Wheels and castors:
  • Four swivel castors required; each must withstand 1/3 of total permissible mass and meet EN 840-5.
  • Direction locks must be fitted to at least two castors; two braked wheels recommended, with optional centralized locking operable by a standard triangular key.
• Structural strength and nominal mass:
  • Containers must support 0.4 kg/dm³ × nominal volume.
  • Containers > 1 100 L must be able to carry 440 kg.
• Finish and safety:
  • Smooth surfaces, drain plug recommended, ribs and frontal receiver geometry controlled.
  • Safety and health requirements per EN 840-6.
• Testing and marking:
  • Performance tests per EN 840-5.
  • Durable markings required: standard number, nominal volume, manufacturer, total permissible mass, manufacturing date. Plastic parts marked per EN ISO 11469.

This document (EN 840-3:2020) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 183 “Waste
management”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by October 2020, and conflicting national standards shall
be withdrawn at the latest by October 2020.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
This document supersedes EN 840-3:2012.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are listed below:
a) Figure 2 "System dimensions design B (type plastic)" and Figure 3 "System dimensions design C
(type metal)" have been updated;
b) Figure 9 "Handles above trunnion (type metal)" and Figure 10 "Functional dimension for frontal
receivers" have been added;

1 Scope
This document specifies dimensions and design requirements of mobile waste and recycling containers
with 4 wheels, with dome lid(s) and capacity up to 1 300 l to be used by trunnion and/or comb lifting
device.
These containers are only approved for the before explicitly mentioned lifting devices.

4 Volumes
This part of EN 840 identifies the two classes of containers:
— Class I - small size (nominal volume up to 1 000 l);
— Class II - large size (nominal volume between 1 000 l and 1 300 l).
Within the two above-mentioned classes of containers the following volumes are identified: 770 l,
1 000 l, 1 100 l and 1 300 l. Nominal volumes different from those referenced can be used by agreement
between user and manufacturer. The tolerance of the volumes shall be ± 5 % maximum measured
according to EN 840-5.
5 Dimensions and design
5.1 The design of the containers need not correspond to the drawings given in Figures 1 to 3. The
functional dimensions given in Table 1 shall be respected. Recommendations for manufacturers of
lifting devices are given in EN 1501-5:—.
