Overview
EN 316:2009 (CEN) is the European Standard that defines, classifies and prescribes the symbol system for wood fibre boards (fibreboards). Approved by CEN in January 2009, it applies to fibreboard panel material with a nominal thickness of 1.5 mm or greater, manufactured from lignocellulosic fibres with application of heat and/or pressure. The standard covers definitions, a combined classification system (starting from production process), and the established set of symbols used to mark board type, conditions of use and application purpose.
Key topics
- Definitions: clear terms for “wood fibreboard”, “wet process board” (fibre moisture > 20% at forming) and “dry process board” (fibre moisture < 20% at forming). The standard notes bonding may come from natural felting or from added synthetic adhesives.
- Classification by production process:
- Wet process boards (commonly called hardboard, medium board, softboard) are further classified by density ranges:
- Hardboard (HB): density ≥ 900 kg/m3
- Medium boards (MB): 400 to < 900 kg/m3, subdivided into low (MBL, 400–<560 kg/m3) and high (MBH, 560–<900 kg/m3)
- Softboard (SB): 230 to < 400 kg/m3
- Dry process boards (MDF): classification allows additional properties; density ranges were removed in the 2009 revision-see EN 622-5 for technical performance classes.
- Wet process boards (commonly called hardboard, medium board, softboard) are further classified by density ranges:
- Additional properties and conditions: boards may be specified for fire retardancy, moisture resistance, biological resistance, mouldability, etc.
- Conditions of use and application purposes:
- Conditions: dry (no symbol), humid (H), exterior (E)
- Application: general purpose (no symbol), load-bearing (L), instantaneous/short-term load (S)
- Load-bearing categories: digits 1 (load-bearing) and 2 (heavy duty)
- Symbol composition: type.symbol + condition + application + load digits (e.g., HB.HLA, MDF.HLS).
Applications and users
EN 316:2009 is practical for:
- Manufacturers and product developers for labelling and product specification
- Test laboratories and QA teams for classification checks
- Architects, structural engineers and specifiers selecting appropriate fibreboard types for building components
- Procurement and compliance officers ensuring material meets European designation and labelling
- Regulators and standards bodies aligning national standards with CEN requirements
