Overview

EN ISO 7840:2021 (ISO 7840:2021) specifies requirements and physical tests for fire‑resistant fuel hoses used in permanently installed fuel systems of small craft. The standard covers hoses for conveying petrol (including ethanol blends) and diesel (including FAME blends) and defines construction, performance and test methods to reduce the risk of fire and fuel leakage in recreational and other small watercraft up to 24 m hull length. It supersedes EN ISO 7840:2018 and provides a harmonized route to conformity with safety requirements of Directive 2013/53/EU where applicable.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and limits
    • Applies to permanently installed fuel hoses (not hoses entirely within the stern splash well connected directly to outboard engines).
    • Working pressure limits: 0.34 MPa for hoses with inner diameter ≤ 10 mm; 0.25 MPa for hoses up to 63 mm inner diameter.
  • Materials and construction
    • Hoses must have a non‑porous, smooth inner surface free from defects and chemical contaminants.
    • Tube (inner liner) and cover (outer jacket) defined for fuel contact and weather/ozone protection.
  • Physical tests (finished hose)
    • Bursting pressure, vacuum‑collapse, volume change, mass reduction, cold‑flex, abrasion, dry heat resistance, oil resistance, adhesion.
    • Fire resistance test (Annex A - normative) to verify hose performance under fire exposure.
    • Fuel permeation requirements and test method (Annex B - normative), including provisions for low‑permeation hoses (newly emphasized).
    • Ozone resistance assessment.
  • Marking and conformity
    • Marking requirements and reference to presumption of conformity with EU essential safety requirements when cited in the Official Journal.

Practical applications and users

  • Who uses EN ISO 7840:2021:
    • Hose manufacturers for product design, testing and certification.
    • Boat builders and marine engineers specifying fuel system components.
    • Test laboratories performing the normative tests (fire, permeation, burst, etc.).
    • Regulatory authorities and certifiers assessing compliance with recreational craft directives.
    • Procurement/specification teams selecting compliant fire‑resistant fuel hoses.
  • Practical value:
    • Ensures fuel hoses are safe for use with petrol/ethanol and diesel/FAME blends.
    • Reduces fire and vapor risks on small craft through validated fire‑resistance and permeation performance.
    • Supports regulatory compliance and consistent product quality.

Related standards

  • ISO 8469:2021 - Non‑fire‑resistant fuel hoses.
  • ISO 10088:2013 - Permanently installed fuel systems for small craft.
  • Normative test references: ISO 1402, ISO 1817, ISO 7233, ISO 7326, and EN 14214 (FAME specification).

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).

This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition (ISO 7840:2013), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— requirements for low permeation fuel hoses have been added in 6.9;
— the test fluids in 6.2 for petrol have been clarified;
— the test set-up in Figure B.1 has been revised to remove the vented capillary tube.

The article discusses EN ISO 7840:2021, which sets out requirements and tests for fire-resistant fuel hoses used in small craft. These hoses are designed to convey petrol, petrol blended with ethanol, diesel fuel, or diesel fuel blended with FAME. The working pressure for these hoses should not exceed 0.34 MPa for hoses with an inner diameter up to 10 mm, and 0.25 MPa for hoses up to 63 mm inner diameter. It is important to note that this standard applies to fuel hoses in small craft with permanently installed fuel systems, but it does not include hoses within the splash well at the stern of the craft that are directly connected to an outboard engine. Non-fire-resistant fuel hoses are covered by ISO 8469:2021, while specifications for permanently installed fuel systems can be found in ISO 10088:2013.
