Means for resealing threaded joints of gas pipework in buildings
This European Standard specifies the properties and the test methods of sealants used to reseal threaded joints of metallic gas pipework in buildings operated at a maximum allowed operating pressure of 100 mbar (such sealants hereafter are referred to as "sealants"). Note Gas pipework in buildings is in accord ance with EN 1775 the pipework between the point of delivery and the inlet connection to the gas appliance.

Overview - EN 13090:2000 (CEN)
EN 13090:2000 is a European standard published by CEN that defines the requirements for sealants used to reseal threaded joints of metallic gas pipework in buildings. The standard specifies the properties and the test methods that such sealants must meet for use on gas installations operated at a maximum allowed operating pressure of 100 mbar. It applies to gas pipework as defined in EN 1775 (pipework between the point of delivery and the inlet connection to the appliance).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and application: Requirements focus on resealing materials for threaded joints in metallic gas distribution systems inside buildings, up to 100 mbar operating pressure.
- Properties specified: The standard sets out the necessary physical and performance characteristics that sealants must demonstrate for safe and reliable resealing (e.g., compatibility with gas service, sealing performance, durability).
- Test methods: EN 13090 describes test procedures to verify that sealants meet the required properties. (The standard itself contains the specific test descriptions and acceptance criteria.)
- Material usage: Limits the standard to sealants used for metallic gas pipework threaded connections; it does not cover non-metallic pipe systems or other sealing techniques.
- Reference to EN 1775: The definition of gas pipework in buildings follows EN 1775, clarifying the installation boundary covered.
Practical applications
- Selection and qualification of sealants for maintenance or installation work on gas pipework threaded joints in residential, commercial, and light industrial buildings.
- Ensuring leak-tight restorations after joint assembly or maintenance to maintain gas safety and compliance with regulations.
- Providing objective test-based evidence for manufacturers and specifiers that a resealing product is suitable for gas service at ≤100 mbar.
Who uses EN 13090:2000
- Gas installers, plumbers and maintenance technicians specifying or applying resealing compounds.
- Sealant and chemical manufacturers developing products for gas installations.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies assessing sealant performance.
- Specifiers, safety officers and procurement teams responsible for gas installation compliance and asset maintenance.
Related standards
- EN 1775 - defines gas pipework in buildings and is referenced by EN 13090 for scope and applicability.
- Other CEN national adoptions implement EN 13090 into local standards and regulations.
