ISO 217:2013 specifies a primary range and a supplementary range of untrimmed sizes of paper in sheets which are to be trimmed to sizes as given in ISO 216 and establishes a system of designation of untrimmed sizes.
ISO 217:2013 also specifies the method for the indication of machine direction of untrimmed sizes.

Diese Internationale Norm legt eine Grundreihe und eine Ergänzungsreihe für Rohformate für Bogen fest, die auf die in ISO 216 festgelegten Formate beschnitten werden sollen. Darüber hinaus wird ein System zur Kennzeichnung von Rohformaten eingeführt.
Weiterhin legt diese Internationale Norm ein System für die Angabe der Maschinenlaufrichtung von Roh-formaten fest.

EN ISO 217:2013 - "Paper - Untrimmed sizes - Designation and tolerances for primary and supplementary ranges, and indication of machine direction" specifies standard untrimmed sheet sizes and a system for identifying machine direction (MD) for sheets intended to be trimmed to ISO 216 sizes. The standard defines a primary range (R) and a supplementary range (SR) of untrimmed sizes, how to designate those sizes (in millimetres or by ISO ID), and the permissible tolerances and measurement conditions.

• Tolerances
  • Default permissible deviation: ±0.5% of the nominal dimension, rounded to the nearest millimetre.
  • Upper limit: if 0.5% > 5 mm, max tolerance is ±5 mm.
  • Lower limit: if 0.5% < 3 mm, tolerance is ±3 mm.
  • Manufacturing or conversion tolerances may be stricter and should be agreed between trading partners.
• Measurement conditions
  • Dimensions must be measured under the standard atmosphere specified in ISO 187.
