Overview

EN ISO 10693:2014 (ISO 10693:1995) specifies a volumetric method for the determination of carbonate content in air-dried soil samples. The procedure uses acid decomposition of carbonates and quantifies the evolved carbon dioxide with a Scheibler apparatus. The carbonate content is reported as an equivalent concentration of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and applies to all types of air-dried soils prepared according to ISO 11464.

Key Topics

  • Principle: Hydrochloric acid reacts with carbonates to release CO2. The gas volume is measured and compared with CaCO3 standards to calculate carbonate content.
  • Primary equipment: Scheibler apparatus (single-sample unit), reaction vessels (150 ml), plastic cups (10 ml), calibrated U-tube, storage vessel with water, stop-cocks and an analytical balance (accuracy 0.1 mg).
  • Reagents and materials: Analytical-grade water (conductivity ≤ 0.2 mS/m at 25 °C), hydrochloric acid c(HCl) = 4 mol/l (prepared by diluting 340 ml concentrated HCl to 1 000 ml), and calcium carbonate powder as standard.
  • Sample prep: Use the <2 mm fraction of air-dried soil pretreated per ISO 11464. Determine water content per ISO 11465 to report dry-mass results.
  • Operation notes:
    • Add 20 ml water to the reaction vessel and place the weighed test portion inside.
    • Fill the plastic cup with ~7 ml HCl and place it in the vessel, ensuring no contact with the soil until the vessel is closed and connected to the Scheibler unit.
    • Shake until the CO2 volume stabilizes (typically around 5 min; not longer than 1 h) and measure to 0.1 ml accuracy.
    • Include two blanks and CaCO3 standards (0.200 g and 0.400 g) in each series.
  • Interferences: Other gases (e.g., H2S from sulfides) can inflate CO2 readings. When sulfides are present, HgCl2 may be added to the acid to precipitate sulfide as HgS before measurement.
  • Quality: The standard defines repeatability and requires temperature-controlled measurements; results are reported on an oven-dry basis.

Applications

  • Soil quality assessment and monitoring
  • Agronomy and fertilizer/liming planning
  • Environmental site characterization and remediation decision-making
  • Baseline surveys for carbon and mineral investigations

Related Standards

  • ISO 11464 - Soil pretreatment for physico-chemical analyses
  • ISO 11465 - Determination of dry matter and water content (gravimetric)
  • ISO 3696 - Water for analytical laboratory use
  • ISO 5725 - Precision of test methods (repeatability/reproducibility)

This standard offers a practical, repeatable laboratory method to quantify carbonate content using a volumetric CO2 measurement. It is widely used by environmental laboratories, agronomists and soil scientists for routine soil characterization and decision support.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 10693 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISOnC 190, Seil quality, Subcommittee SC 3, Chemical methods and seil
characteris tics.
