Overview

EN ISO 5845-1:1999, titled "Technical drawings - Simplified representation of the assembly of parts with fasteners - Part 1: General principles", is a key standard developed by CEN in alignment with ISO 5845-1:1995. This international standard establishes the fundamental principles for the simplified graphical representation of fasteners such as holes, bolts (screws), and rivets on technical drawings. The purpose of this standard is to provide a clear, efficient, and universally understood method for depicting fasteners in mechanical engineering documentation, promoting consistent communication across design, manufacturing, and installation processes.

Key Topics

  • General principles for symbolic fastener representation: EN ISO 5845-1 provides guidelines on how to represent holes, bolts, screws, and rivets in technical drawings, particularly focusing on simplified symbols suitable for projection planes both normal and parallel to fastener axes.

  • Projection methods and line types: The standard specifies the usage of continuous thick lines (type A) and thin lines (type B) following ISO 128 for correct symbolic rendering of fasteners. For example, holes and bolts are indicated by a cross symbol with optional center dots to aid template creation.

  • Symbolic details for different fastener types:

    • Representation varies based on whether holes or fasteners are drilled in workshops or on site, and whether countersinking exists.
    • Specific symbolic variations cover drilled fittings, countersunk holes on near or far sides, and fitted nuts or rivets.
  • Dimensioning rules: The standard aligns dimensioning practices with ISO 129, indicating how to use leader lines and extension lines to mark diameters and designate fastener types. Grouped fasteners may be dimensioned collectively with quantity indicators.

  • Terminology and normative references: EN ISO 5845-1 references several standards crucial for consistent application, including:

    • ISO 128 (Technical drawings - General principles of presentation)
    • ISO 129 (Technical drawings - Dimensioning)
    • ISO 10209 parts 1 & 2 (Technical product documentation vocabulary)
    • ISO 5845-2 (Part 2, dealing specifically with aerospace rivets)

Applications

This standard is essential for mechanical engineers, technical drafters, and manufacturing specialists who work with fastened assemblies in various industries, such as:

  • Structural metalwork and mechanical engineering: Facilitates the clear communication of fastener details on assembly drawings, reducing errors and improving efficiency during production.

  • Manufacturing and installation: Enables precise interpretation of fastener locations and characteristics, supporting on-site assembly and quality control.

  • Documentation and quality assurance: Ensures drawings conform to international best practices for fastener representation, assisting in standard audits and cross-company collaborations.

  • Engineering design software: Acts as a guideline for developing CAD tools and automated drafting systems to include standardized symbols and dimensioning of fastened joints.

Related Standards

  • ISO 128: Provides essential rules for the general presentation and line types in technical drawings.
  • ISO 129: Covers dimensioning principles used in combination with simplified fastener symbols.
  • ISO 10209 (Parts 1 & 2): Defines vocabulary for technical product documentation and projection methods.
  • ISO 5845-2: Extends fastener representation rules specifically for aerospace rivet assemblies.
  • National and regional adaptations: Many countries adopt EN ISO 5845-1 into their standardization systems, often integrating it with local practices.

By using EN ISO 5845-1:1999 compliant drawings, engineers and drafters ensure clarity, reduce ambiguity, and achieve universal understanding of fastener assemblies in technical designs, leading to streamlined production and improved product quality. This standard is a fundamental reference for anyone involved in the creation or interpretation of mechanical engineering drawings involving fasteners.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 5845-l was prepared by Technical Committee
ISOfTC 10, Technical drawings, product definition and related documen-
tation, Subcommittee SC 6, Mechanical engineering documentation.
This first edition of IS0 5845-l is a partial revision of IS0 5261 :1981,
clause 3 of which has been technically revised.
IS0 5845 consists of the following parts, under the general title Technical
drawings - Simplified representation of the assembly of parts with
fasteners:
- Part 7: General principles
- Part 2: Rivets for aerospace equipment

Introduction
IS0 5845 has been devised to provide a universal means of communi-
cation among the various parties involved in the design and manufacture,
in general, as well as the installation of fasteners.
The representation of fasteners on technical drawings should conform to
one of the following two methods, which must meet requirements for
microcopying and reproduction:
a) conventional drawing of fasteners (according to IS0 128); this method
is particularly suitable for drawings containing a small number of
fasteners, or when the use of symbols may not provide complete
understanding;
.
symbo IIC repres e ntatio this method is best suited to drawings con-
b) n;
taining a large n U mber of fasteners (s ee clauses 4 and 5).
Requirements within industries vary considerably; in recognition of this
fact, IS0 5845 is presented in two parts. Part 1 is mainly devoted to
structural metal work. Part 2 is mainly devoted to aerospace equipment.
Both are recommended for application to other fields as well.
