ISO/IEC 19788 specifies, in a rule-based manner, metadata elements and their attributes for the description of learning resources. This includes the rules governing the identification of metadata elements and the specification of metadata attributes.
These metadata elements are used to form the description of a learning resource, i.e. as a metadata learning resource (MLR) record.
ISO/IEC 19788-5:2012 specifies, using the framework specified in ISO/IEC 19788-1, educational aspects of learning resources across various educational, cultural and linguistic settings.

Zur Beschreibung von Lernressourcen legt ISO/IEC 19788 auf der Grundlage von Regeln Metadatenelemente und deren Attribute fest. Das umfasst die Regeln zur Bezeichnung von Metadatenelementen und die Festlegung der Attribute der Metadaten.
Diese Metadatenelemente werden genutzt, um eine Beschreibung der Lernressource zu erstellen, d. h. als (MLR) Eintrag einer Metadaten-Lernressource.
Dieser Teil von ISO/IEC 19788 legt unter Verwendung des in ISO/IEC 19788-1 festgelegten Rahmenwerks quer durch die verschiedenen pädagogischen, kulturellen und linguistischen Konfigurationen Bildungsaspekte der Lernressourcen fest.

The text of ISO/IEC 19788-5:2012 has been prepared by Technical Committee JTC 1 “Information
technology” of the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) and has been taken over as EN ISO/IEC 19788-5:2014 by Technical Committee
CEN/TC 353 “Information and Communication Technologies for Learning, Education and Training” the
secretariat of which is held by UNI.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by July 2014, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the
latest by July 2014.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. CEN [and/or CENELEC] shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
