General Information
Overview
CEN/TR 16470:2013 is a Technical Report published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) addressing the environmental aspects of ductile iron pipe systems specifically designed for water supply and sewerage applications. This standard provides a comprehensive framework to identify and evaluate the environmental impacts of ductile iron pipes throughout their entire life cycle-from raw material extraction and manufacturing to installation, use, recycling, and end-of-life management.
The report follows the life cycle assessment (LCA) principles in accordance with EN ISO 14044 and also integrates health and safety considerations related to the production, application, and recycling phases. It supports the incorporation of environmental provisions into product standards to promote sustainable water infrastructure solutions.
Key Topics
Life Cycle Approach (LCA) for Ductile Iron Pipes
Encompasses stages such as raw material extraction, pipe manufacturing, transportation, installation, use (water/sewage conveyance), and end-of-life recycling, enabling a thorough environmental impact assessment.Energy Efficiency and Leakage Prevention
Highlights that ductile iron pipe systems feature low leakage rates and optimized hydraulic performance, leading to reduced energy consumption for pumping water and sewerage over their service life.Material Optimization and Robustness
Emphasizes design practices aimed at avoiding unnecessary material use while ensuring mechanical strength, thus enabling resource conservation and reduced environmental footprint.Recycling and Resource Conservation
Details the straightforward recycling process of ductile iron pipes, which can be remelted and reused multiple times without loss of material properties, contributing to lower mining demands, reduced emissions, and waste minimization.Trenchless Installation Techniques
Covers environmentally friendly trenchless methods such as horizontal directional drilling, pipe bursting, and pipe jacking. These reduce excavation waste, minimize environmental and social disruption, cut CO₂ emissions, and lower costs and risks associated with traditional open trench installation.Environmental and Health & Safety Considerations
Advocates for assessment of impacts inclusive of construction emissions, operational leakage, soil and water contamination risks, and worker safety during installation and recycling activities.
Applications
CEN/TR 16470:2013 is critical for:
Water Supply Networks
Designing and deploying ductile iron pipelines that optimize energy consumption and minimize leaks, ensuring durable and sustainable water conveyance.Pressurized Sewer Systems
Utilizing ductile iron pipes for robust, leak-tight solutions that reduce infiltration and exfiltration, helping protect soil and groundwater from contamination.Gravity Sewer Pipelines
Implementing durable pipes that withstand service conditions while preventing pollution from leaks or failures, ultimately reducing sewage treatment costs and environmental damage.Infrastructure Renovation and Replacement
Applying trenchless technology methods to extend the operational lifespan of sewer and water pipelines with minimal disruption to communities and ecosystems.Recycling and Circular Economy Initiatives
Facilitating the recovery and reuse of materials from end-of-life ductile iron pipes to conserve natural resources and reduce environmental impact in future projects.

3 General guidance
3.1 Provisions dealing with the introduction of environmental aspects into European
Standards
European Standards concerning ductile iron pipe systems currently exist without any direct reference for the
user to environmental awareness and the possible environmental aspects and potential impacts. This does
not necessarily lead to pipe systems which are less environmentally friendly, because the user has other
incentives when considering environmental aspects, such as installation considerations, legal requirements
etc. However, the inclusion of environmental provisions encourages the consideration of environmental
aspects in cases where such incentives do not exist.
In many cases, i
