Overview
EN 16603-50-23:2022 is a European standard developed by CEN under the Technical Committee CEN-CENELEC/TC 5 “Space.” It formalizes the adoption of CCSDS 732.0-B-3, the AOS Space Data Link Protocol, for use within the European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) framework. This standard defines modifications to the original CCSDS protocol to ensure compatibility and consistency with ECSS requirements.
The AOS Space Data Link Protocol (Advanced Orbiting Systems) provides a data link layer protocol specialized for the efficient transfer of varied space application data over space-to-ground, ground-to-space, or space-to-space communication links. EN 16603-50-23:2022 supersedes the previous EN 16603-50-03:2014 and aligns with updated ECSS standards to meet the evolving needs of space mission data transmission.
Key Topics
Scope and Context
The standard applies the CCSDS 732.0-B-3 protocol with specific adaptations for ECSS, expanding the communication scenarios to include space-to-ground and ground-to-space links. It emphasizes efficient real-time and replay Transfer Frame management in space communication systems.Modified Requirements
Key modifications include:- Redefinition of the protocol scope to cover three communication directions: space-to-ground, ground-to-space, and space-to-space.
- Restrictions on the use of the Replay Flag within Transfer Frames, prohibiting the flag’s value of '1' to simplify frame processing and ensure clear differentiation between realtime and replay data frames.
- Additional notes on the Frame Header Error Control, recommending its restriction to physical channels not protected by error-correcting codes like Reed-Solomon, thereby optimizing error detection practices.
Compatibility and Integration
The adoption notice ensures that the standard can be seamlessly integrated into the broader ECSS system of space technology standards, enhancing interoperability and reliability in European space missions.
Applications
Space Communication Systems
EN 16603-50-23:2022 is essential for developers and engineers working on spacecraft communication subsystems that require robust, reliable data link protocols for telemetry, telecommand, and data transfer operations in various mission profiles.Satellite Data Handling
The protocol serves satellite manufacturers and mission operators to facilitate efficient onboard data handling, including storage, retrieval, replay, and real-time transmission of scientific and operational data.Cross-Agency and International Missions
By harmonizing the CCSDS AOS Data Link Protocol with ECSS norms, this standard supports multi-agency cooperation and international space missions requiring consistent data link protocols that are compliant with European standards.

not available in the TM Space Data Link Protocol.
This Adoption Notice adopts and applies CCSDS 732.0-B-3 with a minimum set
of modifications, identified in the present document, to allow for reference and
for a consistent integration in the ECSS system of standards.
EN 16603-50-03:2014 (based on ECSS-E-ST-50-03) is superseded by the
