Preskusi lastnosti agregatov zaradi termičnih in vremenskih vplivov - 7. del: Odpornost proti zmrzovanju in odtaljevanju lahkih agregatov

Overview

EN 1367-7:2014 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a reference test method to determine the resistance of lightweight aggregates (LWA) to freezing and thawing cycles. This standard is essential for type testing and resolving disputes related to the durability of LWA under freeze-thaw conditions, specifically in accordance with EN 13055. The test applies to lightweight aggregates with particle sizes ranging from 4 mm to a maximum of 32 mm.

This test method involves subjecting LWA test specimens to 20 freeze-thaw cycles-freezing in air at approximately -17.5 °C and thawing in water at about 20 °C-and measuring mass loss to evaluate durability. EN 1367-7:2014 is widely adopted across European countries and emphasizes consistency, reproducibility, and conformity in testing processes for lightweight aggregate thermal and weathering performance.

Key Topics

  • Test Scope and Purpose

    • Reference method for type testing LWA resistance to freeze-thaw cycles
    • Applicable to aggregates sized 4–32 mm
    • Other methods allowed for factory production control if correlated to this reference method
  • Testing Procedure

    • Three test specimens are soaked in water for approximately 240 minutes
    • Specimens undergo 20 freeze-thaw cycles with controlled temperature conditions
    • Freeze: cooling to -17.5°C in air
    • Thaw: warming to 20°C in water bath
    • Drain and dry specimens before initial and final weighing
  • Apparatus and Materials

    • Low-temperature cabinet with air circulation for freezing step
    • Thermostatically controlled water bath for thawing stage
    • Ventilated drying oven for drying specimens to constant mass
    • Corrosion-resistant containers and appropriate sieves
  • Result Calculation and Reporting

    • Mass loss percentage calculated as:
      FLi = [(M1 - M2) / M1] × 100
where M1 = initial dry mass, M2 = final dry mass
    • Average mass loss (FL) of three specimens reported
    • Test report includes essential data such as sample identification, test conditions, and results
  • Normative References

    • EN 13055 for lightweight aggregate definitions
    • EN 932 and EN 933 for sampling and particle size characterization
    • EN 1097 for related physical and mechanical aggregate tests

Applications

EN 1367-7:2014 plays a vital role in construction and civil engineering industries where lightweight aggregates are used in:

  • Lightweight concrete production
  • Mortar and grout formulations
  • Bituminous mixtures and surface treatments
  • Unbound and bound applications requiring freeze-thaw durability

By assessing the freeze-thaw resistance of LWA, manufacturers and material engineers can:

  • Ensure long-term durability of construction materials in cold climates
  • Optimize aggregate selection for specific environmental exposure conditions
  • Maintain compliance with performance criteria under European regulations
  • Control production quality and minimize material degradation during service life

Related Standards

To comprehensively evaluate physical and mechanical properties of aggregates, EN 1367-7:2014 is complemented by other standards in the EN 1367 series and related testing methodologies:

  • EN 1367-1: Resistance to freezing and thawing (general aggregates)
  • EN 1367-6: Resistance to freezing and thawing in the presence of salt (NaCl)
  • EN 13055-1 & EN 13055-2: Specifications for lightweight aggregates in concrete and bituminous materials
  • EN 932 series: Sampling and general properties of aggregates
  • EN 933 series: Geometrical properties of aggregates, including particle size distribution
  • EN 1097 series: Mechanical and physical testing of aggregates
  • EN 1744: Chemical properties of aggregates

By integrating testing approaches from these standards, professionals achieve a robust understanding of aggregate behavior under diverse conditions, ensuring reliability and performance in engineering applications.
