Overview

The EN ISO 17892-1:2014/A1:2022 standard is an amendment to the original ISO 17892-1:2014, titled Geotechnical investigation and testing - Laboratory testing of soil - Part 1: Determination of water content. Published by CEN in May 2022, this amendment updates European and international practice for laboratory measurement of soil water content, a critical parameter in geotechnical engineering, foundation construction, underground works, and earthworks.

This updated standard ensures consistent and accurate determination of water content in soil samples, providing vital data for interpreting soil behavior and properties during geotechnical investigations. The amendment refines testing procedures especially around sample handling and weighing to reduce errors and enhance reliability.

Key Topics

  • Water Content Determination Method: The standard specifies laboratory procedures to measure the moisture content of soil samples by oven drying and weighing, which is fundamental to understanding soil physical properties.

  • Sample Handling and Cooling Procedures:

    • When using containers with lids, the lid must be placed immediately after removing the sample from the oven.
    • The specimen and container should cool to room temperature before weighing to prevent measurement errors caused by heat-induced convection currents.
    • If no lid is available, specimens should cool in a desiccator or be weighed within one hour of oven removal to avoid moisture loss.
  • Weighing Accuracy: The procedure highlights potential balance errors during weighing of hot samples and advises on best practices to mitigate this issue, ensuring precision in mass measurement of containers, lids, and dried specimens.

  • Standardization and Compliance: As a CEN-approved document, this amendment must be integrated into national standards across European member countries by November 2022, ensuring harmonized geotechnical testing practices internationally.

Applications

  • Foundation and Earthworks Engineering: Reliable determination of soil water content informs the design and safety assessments of foundations, embankments, and excavation projects.

  • Underground Construction: Moisture content influences soil stability and load-bearing capacity, essential for tunnels, shafts, and other subterranean structures.

  • Soil Quality and Environmental Assessment: Accurate moisture measurements help evaluate soil conditions impacting drainage, erosion, and contamination studies.

  • Geotechnical Investigations: This standard supports geotechnical laboratories and engineering firms in producing consistent water content data for site characterizations and ground improvement plans.

Related Standards

  • ISO 17892 Series: This document is part 1 of a multipart series covering various laboratory soil testing methods, including density, particle size distribution, and shear strength.

  • EN ISO 14688: Related to soil identification and classification during site investigations.

  • EN 1997 (Eurocode 7): Provides guidelines for geotechnical design, where soil water content data is integral.

  • CEN/TC 341 Technical Committee Documents: Other standards developed for geotechnical investigation and testing complement this water content determination method.
