Overview
EN 15915:2010 (CEN) - "Copper and copper alloys - Determination of silver content - Flame atomic absorption spectrometric method (FAAS)" specifies two validated FAAS procedures for measuring silver (Ag) content in copper and copper alloys in unwrought, wrought and cast forms. The methods cover silver mass fractions from 0.01 % to 2.0 %, with two paths:
- Method A: for Ag 0.01 %–1.00 % when antimony/tin ≤ 0.005 % and silicon ≤ 0.010 %.
- Method B: for Ag 0.01 %–2.00 % when antimony/tin > 0.005 % or silicon > 0.010 %.
The analytical principle is dissolution of a defined test portion followed by aspiration into an air/acetylene flame and measurement of silver absorption at the 328.1 nm line using a silver hollow-cathode or electrodeless discharge lamp.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: unwrought, wrought and cast copper products; Ag mass fractions 0.01–2.0 %.
- Sampling: follow ISO 1811‑1 / ISO 1811‑2; test material should be fine drillings, chips or millings (max thickness 0.5 mm).
- Test portion: typical mass for Method A is (0.500 ± 0.001) g.
- Reagents & safety: analytical-grade reagents, distilled water; key reagents include nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid (HF), boric acid and a fluoroboric‑nitric mixture. WARNING: exclude chlorides and take special precautions handling HF.
- Apparatus: flame atomic absorption spectrometer with air/acetylene burner and silver source lamp.
- Calibration and matrix compensation: calibration curves are prepared from silver standard solutions; copper base solutions are added to calibration standards to compensate for chemical interaction (matrix effects). Adjust copper additions when analyzing low-copper alloys.
- Quality controls: blank tests, check tests with reference or synthetic samples, and either calibration-curve or bracketing approaches for result expression.
- Procedure notes: stepwise dissolution, dilution ranges depending on expected Ag content, instrument adjustment and spectrometric measurements.
Applications and users
EN 15915:2010 is used for:
- Laboratory testing and quality control in metal production and alloy fabrication.
- Metallurgical analysis for alloy certification, incoming inspection and failure analysis.
- Third‑party testing bodies and conformity assessment for products that specify silver content. Primary users: analytical chemists, metallurgists, QA/QC personnel, testing laboratories and standards organizations.
