Overview
EN 15916-2:2010 - "Copper and copper alloys - Determination of tellurium content - Part 2: Medium tellurium content - Flame atomic absorption spectrometric method (FAAS)" is a CEN standard specifying a validated FAAS procedure for measuring tellurium (Te) in copper and copper alloys. The method applies to castings and unwrought or wrought products with tellurium mass fractions between 0.20 % and 1.00 %. It defines sampling, reagents, apparatus, calibration and calculation procedures to produce traceable, comparable results.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and matrix: Applicable to Cu and Cu-alloys (cast/unwrought/wrought) with Te 0.20–1.00 %.
- Principle: Dissolve a test portion in nitric acid, dilute, aspirate into an air/acetylene flame and measure absorption of the Te 214.3 nm line using a tellurium hollow‑cathode lamp.
- Sample/test portion: Typical test portion is 0.50 g (fine drillings, chips or millings ≤ 0.5 mm) dissolved and diluted to a defined final volume (100 ml).
- Reagents and standards: Analytical-grade nitric and hydrochloric acids; a 1 g/l Te stock solution and a 10 g/l Cu base solution are used to prepare matrix-matched calibration standards.
- Calibration: Use a series of calibration solutions (six standards recommended) with copper, chloride and nitrate concentrations matched to test solutions; add alloying elements to calibration solutions if they exceed 10 % in the sample. Bracketing (±10 %) is allowed as an alternative for final measurement.
- Instrument setup: Flame AAS with air/acetylene burner on oxidising conditions. Lamp stabilization and burner/gas adjustments are required for maximum absorbance.
- Quality checks: Blank test, check test with reference material or synthetic sample, filtration if AgCl precipitate forms.
- Results & reporting: Calculation of tellurium mass fraction from measured concentration, sample mass and dilution volume. Test report must reference EN 15916-2 and include sample ID, method, results, deviations and signatures.
- Precision: Interlaboratory validation (10 labs) reported a reference value ~0.61 % Te with repeatability r = 0.012 % and reproducibility R = 0.022 %.
Applications and users
- Quality control and acceptance testing in copper alloy production and foundries.
- Metallurgical and chemical analysis laboratories performing compositional certification.
- Material verification for connectors, electrical components and specialty Cu-alloys where controlled Te content influences machinability and properties.
- Research labs and conformity assessment bodies needing a standardized FAAS method for medium tellurium content.
