Overview

FprEN 16087-2 is a European standard developed by CEN for the characterization of soil improvers and growing media. It specifies a method to determine the aerobic biological degradation rate of organic matter in composted materials using a self-heating test. This standard provides a structured approach for evaluating the biological activity of composts, which is essential for assessing their quality, stability, and suitability for use as soil amendments or components of growing media.

The method outlined is strictly applicable to composted materials and has been validated through interlaboratory studies on commonly traded compost products such as composted bark, biowaste compost, and green compost.

Key Topics

  • Aerobic Biological Degradation: The standard focuses on measuring the breakdown of organic matter in compost under aerobic conditions, an important indicator of compost maturity and quality.
  • Self-Heating Test: The core of this method is the monitoring of temperature increase (self-heating) as an indicator of microbial activity within a compost sample.
  • Sample Preparation and Testing: Detailed procedures for preparing samples, establishing optimal moisture content using a “fist test,” and conducting the self-heating measurement in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Expression of Results: The outcome is expressed as the maximum temperature reached during the test, and the degree of decomposition (Rottegrad), providing quantitative indicators of compost activity.
  • Validation and Reproducibility: The method was validated according to ISO 5725-2 principles, ensuring reliability and repeatability across laboratories and compost types.

Applications

The methodologies outlined in FprEN 16087-2 are valuable for various stakeholders in the composting, soil amendment, and growing media industries:

  • Quality Control: Compost producers and soil improver manufacturers can use this standard to monitor and ensure the consistency, maturity, and biological stability of their products before market release.
  • Research and Development: Laboratories and researchers benefit from the reproducible, standardized procedures for comparative testing and product development.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Compliance with FprEN 16087-2 supports adherence to national and European regulations, including the European Fertilising Product Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, by demonstrating product performance and safety.
  • Product Certification: Organizations offering certified compost or growing media benefit from using standardized biological testing methods to document product claims for quality marks and ecolabels.
  • Environmental Management: Municipalities, agricultural advisors, and environmental agencies utilize these test results to evaluate compost quality for sustainable land application and circular economy practices.

Related Standards

For thorough assessment and product compliance, FprEN 16087-2 should be considered alongside the following standards:

  • CEN/TS 17732:2022: Terminology for soil improvers and growing media, ensuring consistent interpretation and communication within the industry.
  • EN 12579:2024: Specifies standardized procedures for the sampling of soil improvers and growing media to ensure representative test samples.
  • ISO 5725-2: Outlines general principles for determining the repeatability and reproducibility of standard measurement methods, underpinning the validation of this test procedure.
  • European Fertilising Product Regulation (EU) 2019/1009: Sets the regulatory framework for the safety, quality, and labelling of fertilising products in the European Union.

By implementing the procedures defined in FprEN 16087-2, organizations can ensure accurate assessment of the aerobic degradation activity of composts, enhance quality assurance processes, and meet evolving European and international market demands for sustainable and high-performing soil improvers and growing media.
