Overview

EN 16713-2:2016/prA1:2018 is a European standard developed by CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 402, focusing on water circulation systems in domestic swimming pools. It specifies the essential requirements and test methods for equipment designed to circulate water in private swimming pools. This standard complements EN 16582-1, which defines swimming pools for domestic use, and excludes pools for public use, spas, paddling pools, pre-filtration systems, and natural or nature-like pools.

The standard ensures that domestic pool circulation systems meet safety, performance, and durability criteria in line with European regulations. It has undergone amendments addressing specific technical details such as suction chamber design and safety requirements.

Key Topics

  • Circulation System Requirements
This standard outlines the minimum performance, construction, and safety requirements for circulation systems in domestic pools. This includes pumps, suction chambers, and water outlets critical to ensuring safe and effective water flow.

  • Test Methods
Standardized test procedures are detailed to evaluate circulation system components for compliance with the defined requirements. These tests assess aspects such as hydraulic performance, safety under normal operation, and resistance to wear.

  • Safety Measures
Specific modifications address the design of suction chambers for floor and wall water outlets, emphasizing the proper integration of prefabricated covers or grates to meet safety standards. It excludes certain balneotherapy equipment from some requirements, recognizing their specialized applications.

  • Scope Limitations
The standard clearly differentiates applicability, excluding public swimming pools (EN 15288-1), spas, paddling pools (EN 71-8), pre-filtration, and natural pools to focus on domestic pool circulation only.

Applications

EN 16713-2:2016/prA1:2018 is highly relevant for:

  • Manufacturers of Domestic Pool Equipment
Ensures product designs for circulation systems comply with European safety and performance standards, aiding market acceptance and regulatory approval.

  • Pool Installers and Designers
Provides guidelines for selecting compliant circulation components and implementing safe installation practices to guarantee water hygiene and safety.

  • Safety Inspectors and Certification Bodies
Offers standardized testing protocols to verify product conformity and enforce safety regulations in domestic pool environments.

  • Pool Owners and Operators
Enhances understanding of safety features in circulation systems, promoting safer pool usage and maintenance practices.

Related Standards

  • EN 16582-1: Defines the scope and general requirements for domestic swimming pools, serving as a foundational reference for pool classification.

  • prEN 16713-1: Covers filtration systems designed for domestic pools, complementing circulation system requirements.

  • prEN 16713-3: Specifies treatment systems including chemical dosing and disinfection, which work alongside circulation for water quality management.

  • EN 15288-1: Applies to public swimming pools, distinct from the domestic pool focus of EN 16713-2.

  • EN 71-8: Regulates safety specifications for paddling pools, exempt from this circulation system standard.

Practical Value

Implementing EN 16713-2 helps manufacturers and pool operators ensure water circulation systems meet stringent European safety and efficiency requirements. By following this standard:

  • Circulation systems achieve optimal water flow, improving hygiene and swimmer safety.
  • Risk of suction entrapment and hazards is minimized through standardized suction chamber design.
  • Testing methods enable verification of compliance, reducing liability risks.
  • Clear scope differentiation prevents misapplication of requirements across different pool types.

Overall, EN 16713-2:2016/prA1:2018 is a critical standard for advancing safety, reliability, and innovation in domestic swimming pool water circulation systems within Europe.
