EN 16582-3:2015
(Main)Domestic swimming pools - Part 3: Specific requirements including safety and test methods for aboveground pools
General Information
- Abstract
This part of FprEN 16582 specifies the specific safety and quality requirements and test methods for domestic aboveground swimming pools in addition to the general requirements of FprEN 16582 1 and shall be read in conjunction with it. The requirements of this standard take priority over those in FprEN 16582-1.
These requirements and test methods are applicable to aboveground pool structures, including their means of access.
This European Standard applies to pools with a minimum water depth of more than 400 mm.
This European Standard does not apply to:
— pools of public use covered by EN 15288-1;
— paddling pools according to EN 71-8;
— domestic or public use spas.

Overview
EN 16582-3:2015 - published by CEN - defines specific safety and quality requirements and test methods for domestic aboveground swimming pools. It is Part 3 of the EN 16582 series and must be read in conjunction with EN 16582-1:2015 (general requirements). EN 16582-3:2015 applies to aboveground pool structures (including means of access) with a minimum water depth of more than 400 mm and takes priority over Part 1 where requirements conflict. It does not apply to public pools (EN 15288-1), paddling pools (EN 71-8) or spas.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Targets domestic aboveground swimming pools (frame-supported and self-stabilizing types).
- Minimum water depth: > 400 mm.
- Structural tests and mechanical strength
- Resistance to horizontal deformation: horizontal force test (400 N applied via an angle bracket at a specified position).
- Resistance to vertical deformation: vertical load tests using a 300 mm diameter disc; required forces differ by top-wall width (1500 N for >50 mm, 500 N for ≤50 mm).
- Bursting strength: impact/drop test using a cylindrical barrel (diameter 400–500 mm, ~120 l capacity, total mass ~120 kg, tipped into pool at the most unfavourable point). (See standard for exact drop-height specification.)
- Self-stabilizing walls (inflatable / water-filled tubes)
- Overflow and behaviour tests to verify the pool will not collapse or empty suddenly when overflowing or under transient load.
- Deflation stability: pools must retain shape and not collapse when inflatable upper tubes are intentionally deflated.
- Inflation ports: caps must be permanently secured and protected against accidental removal; check valves to prevent instantaneous deflation are required.
- Membrane and material tests
- Tear resistance (EN 1875-3, EN ISO 4674-2): acceptable warp/weft thresholds.
- Weld tensile strength (EN ISO 1421): specified DaN/50 mm requirements.
- Adhesion (EN ISO 2411): minimum adhesion results specified.
Practical applications
- Ensures product safety, durability and user protection for domestic aboveground pools.
- Used to define manufacturing quality and to design aboveground pool structures that resist deformation, impacts and accidental deflation.
- Guides test labs performing conformity testing and certification bodies assessing compliance.
- Useful to manufacturers, product designers, importers, installers, retailers and safety engineers for product development, documentation and market access in CEN member countries.
